I noticed that too. Def not the healthiest food choices to be made for most North Americans.

Yeah but smoking, drinking, BASE jumping, driving, etc. are not very healthy either. But they do give a lot of pleasure.

Indeed. I noticed despite the unhealthy looking diets, none of the people in the photos looked overweight. Most of my diet is better described by the bottom rung of the periodic table vs the food pyramid, but I'm not fat. By western standards. Age 41. 32" waist. It would appear the average american male waist size is 35" and growing. I exercise. I walk everywhere. I'm always on my feet teaching. If my waist starts to thicken, I cut back on pringles and start eating more rice 'n' tuna.

I dunno. I work. I spend my money on pleasures, some of which are pizza, BK, and pringles.

So what's the point about those foods?

I wonder if the over packaging has to do with the Japanese paranoia for cleanliness? My friend and I were musing over how Koreans overpackage. Like when you buy a box of cookies, the cookies are wrapped individually. My friend noted it's probably because of difference in the way Koreans consume snacks vs North Americans. In North America, an open box of cookies won't last long. We'd eat a whole box at once. In Korea, a mother might break open the box, issue one cookie per person at the table and the box might have to last a week. Hence, the cookies need to be wrapped individually for longer freshness.

That aside, though, this whole thing is supposed to be "typical" weekly groceries, right? I wonder if it indicates that eat-out food is more a part of the "typical" American food shopping than other countries.

Good point, I guess you might be right on that. Even the other families that had a pizza...it was frozen.

I'm surprised at how EXPENSIVE the groceries are for a lot of these families too. I mean, $500 a week for a family of four? There goes my entire paycheck.

As far as human health goes, the traditional (Vedic) wisdom is that there are two basic mistakes: overeating and undereating.

Overeating is not such a bad mistake for kids and active young people, but is very bad for less-active adults and old folks - for whom undereating is a good mistake.

Pizza can be pretty healthy, I think (depending on the toppings and crust) - unless one is diabetic.

The sharp rise in diabetes and obesity cases among practically all age groups over the last ten years in the U.S. indicates that the overall diet and lifestyle isn't really healthy - despite the spin put on statistics about life-expectancy...

In countries where meat-consumption is relatively low there tends to be much lower levels of heart disease and cancer (according to articles I've read...)

What spin is that?

And I wonder what their life expectancy is? Those africans eating nuts and whole grains aren't noted for living past 50.

Um.... That's right, Europeans digest Coke differently.

Let's see.

Chad:

Life expectancy at birth:
total population: 47.2 years
male: 46.17 years
female: 48.27 years (2007 est.)

Major infectious diseases:
degree of risk: very high
food or waterborne diseases: bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever

Hrm. Nuts and whole grains aren't very good for you if they're loaded full of parasites. I'll take a pizza, thanks.

Where is the ignorant comment?

It was known even in ancient times that the three main causes of disease are uncleanliness, overeating, and anxiety.

I think that basically still holds true (considering pollution and contamination in its myriad forms to fall under the category of uncleanliness.)

Nuts (clean) and whole grains (cooked) certainly are healthy foods (except for the relatively few people who are allergic to them...)

Poor countries have higher infant mortality rates mainly due to hygienc factors and high infant mortality rates.

Modern medical science propagandists often claim that we live much longer than older, less materially advanced countries because infant mortality rates are factored into the statistics - at least that's my understanding.

However, I think that abortions should also be factored in life-expectancy statistics - which would reflect the fact that many living beings have their lives cut very short...

This pic looks much more familiar to me as an American than the first one.

Surely you jest! Koreans chow down on snacks like they'll never see another.
