And while I'm on the subject, of all the categories covered by discrimination law, the one least deserving of inclusion in the list is religion, since it's (arguably) the only category in the list over which a person exercises choice. A Satanist, for instance, has every right to choose his faith, but that right does not extend to demanding that no one draw any negative conclusions about him as a person on the basis of those beliefs.

That may not be a good example. A Mormon on the job is not protected from people drawing negative conclusions about him as a person. A Mormon is protected from people acting against him purely on the basis on the Mormon's creed.

Protection of peoples' beliefs is absolutely essential, not least because if we allow discrimination based against those who profess to believe in, say, Scientology, than it is possible that people will accuse their professional rivals of being Scientologists.

Granted. I don't think it should be removed from the list. But neither should their beliefs give them the right to discriminate on the basis of their beliefs, as is often the case.

What?

example:

joe takada is buddhist. He's the owner of abc company. He promotes fellow buddhists w/in his company because they're buddhists too. Or he only hires buddhists to begin with.

I think that's what daskalos meant.

Ah. Makes sense. In such a case, the non-Buddhistls would have cause for legal action against the employer.

Or this. Cindy and Bill aren't married but wish to rent an apartment. When they apply to the owners, Mr & Mrs Sweet & Kind Christian, they learn that the landlords don't rent to unmarried couples because it violates a fervent belief against facilitating what they think of as sin. Cindy and Bill have no recourse because Mr & Mrs Christian choose to base their housing policy on a mythical sky god and because most anti-discrimination laws carve out an exception that permits this sort of discrimination.

People making the case for Mr & Mrs Christian tell us that their right to rent their property on the basis of their beliefs trumps Cindy and Bill's right to housing. I think it shouldn't.

Care to back that accusation with some proof? ISTR a similar case some years ago and I don't think the result was what you say.

The disappointing thing is that none of the candidates have spoken up in defense of either Romney or Huckabee on the matter of religion.

When asked about the attacks on Romney because of his religion, Ron Paul said Romney should not be attacked because of his religion but should be for his stances on the issues.

Ya-ta, I suspect you agree a lot more with Ron Paul than you may think.

Ron Paul's Prospects Look Up In Maine
By GLENN ADAMS, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jan 31, 5:04 PM ET

AUGUSTA, Maine - Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has a couple of things going for him at this weekend's Republican caucuses: a band of highly motivated supporters and a natural appeal to Maine's like-minded independents.

His stop in the state earlier this week also made him the only presidential contender from either party to visit before the caucuses.

"I think that (because) he's paid attention to Maine, he'll be rewarded," R. Kenneth Lindell, Paul's campaign coordinator in Maine, said Thursday.

Maine's GOP polling Friday, Saturday and Sunday may be the Texas congressman's best shot at winning a state, and such a feat would be big coming just days before next week's Super Tuesday presidential preference contests in more than 20 states.

Religions are all equally wrong, but not all equal. Have you heard of the Jains? Why no suicide bombers in Tibet? Why no mass pedophilia among Lutherans?

Well, then maybe all political parties are wrong, but not equal.

Why is there no mass pedophilia among Democrats?
