When I'm home for the summers, I use my buddy's Fender 5-string Precision, which I like, but I'd like to get my own bass. I'm looking for advice on how to choose a good bass, what to look for in terms of build quality, tone, electronics, etc. Do different basses really sound all that different from each other, or is it all about the amps?

I'm just a novice player, so I don't need a super high-end model, but I don't want cheese either. I'd like to keep it around $700 Cdn; would I be better to buy one here or wait til I get back home?

Hi, yes all those factors you mentioned do influence the tone as well as the way you play, with fingers or pick, etc. Most people say, and I agree, just go for what feels and sounds best to you, and also what suits the music you play.

As for buying a bass, you'll find a much better selection of basses to choose from in Canada (and the US if you go online) than you will here. I'd wait to buy one there unless you just can't wait.

You could also try talkbass.com and check out the forums there. There are lots of opinions and reviews of basses and amps that might give you some ideas.
However, if you just can't wait to buy a bass back in Canada, I do have a couple of decent basses I'd like to sell.

There are lots of good bass guitars for around the $700 range. I find neck through body (as opposed to bolt on neck) gives a fuller, more rounded tone. Go for active pickups, EMG's or Seymour Duncans are both excellent. A bridge makes a huge difference, a BadassII bridge is superior in many ways. Many companies make good basses, Fender, Kramer, Yamaha. Higher end basses like Paul Reid Smiths, Musicman and Jacksons may cost a little, or a lot more.

If you run around alot, a Rickenbacker is a good bass and likely fairly reasonable too. They are composite and headless.

You'll almost definitely get the best price and selection at Steve's Music in Montreal, or Steve's in Toronto. Long and Mcquade (sp?) would be second.
