Beautiful countryside around there. Buy a motorbike or scooter and ride around Dolsan-do (the island over the famous bridge). Go to Mosageum beach in the summer, it's much nicer than the famous black sand beach and not so busy. Good raw fish if you're into that too.

Some of the young foreigners in town are idiots in my opinion. They go to the bars downtown and upset the owners and thus get all foreigners banned. (I believe foreigners are now banned from at least two bars because of the idiotic antics of a few). And if you're one of those idiots please learn 2 things: (1) Learn about anju and understand that you have to buy it in some places. (2) Understand that in most Korean bars you are required to have a seat, you can't just stand around like in the west. This goes for nightclubs too (outside of the western style ones in big cities).

The E-Mart is just across from the bus station.
If you go towards city hall and into the downtown area, you'll find Dunkin donuts and Baskin Robbins and Dominos and Miller Time all on the same block and street.

If you're around thru 2012 you might be able to see the World's Expo and the KTX extending there.

Yeosu is quite nice.

I've been there a few times, the last time was March 1st of last year. It was 18 C and sunny.

Indeed, get a scooter or a small car and zip around.

Thanks to everyone for the information!. Sounds like I made a good decision.

And Hyeon Een, I doubt I'm one of those idiots, as you put it...I'm 62. The bar scene is some where in my (fondly remembered) past.

Ok good =)

If you're a Christian there is a slightly older crowd of Westerners who go to Church on a Sunday. (Including a slightly.. eccentric.. lady who wears a hanbok to church!)

I believe there are also a bunch of Buddhists who occasionaly get together and do buddhist things if you're into that.

On the whole, I'd recommend you buy a car and tour some of the local areas. It really is a stunning area to live in and if you DON'T check out the surrounding countryside you're really missing out. Also, take the ferries to the islands off the coast. There are a LOT of islands off of the coast which are part of Yeosu city, and since you are going to be there at least a year, I suggest you visit them all. You honestly will not regret that choice if you decide to do it. Some of the islands are pretty remote; but thats part of the appeal IMHO.

Also, please stay healthy! One of the slightly older teachers there died of a massive heart attack not so long ago. Make sure you're healthy before you go =) (And sorry to be so negative!!)
