Do you mean EWHA (American Language School)?

If so.

Here are some posts about the EWHA hagwons:

Not sure if the Sonpa branch is mentioned but even if it isn't it may give you some idea of how the franchise is run in general. Ask for the EMail addresses of the other foreign teachers at the institute and ask them what its like. Ask many questions, seek many opinions, then, finally, trust your own instincts.

In Response To: Anyone worked for EWHA Hogwons? (Greg)

Hi Greg, I was working at Ewha American Language School (Dunsan Campus), in Taejeon until October 12. I walked out because I was not paid a considerable amount of promised overtime wages. That particular school was quite disorganised, and all Ewha employees are subject to having large amounts of money "held back" by the head office. In the end, the owner extorted about 2 million won from me in exchange for a letter of release so that I could seek employment elsewhere. The single-studio apartment they gave me was the size of a shoebox, and situated in the middle of a construction zone. In my opinion, there are definitely better schools out there.

You are getting completely ripped off. I was in a similar situation last year working for EWHA hagwon in Suji. They were even charging me rent. I could not take it anymore, and my teaching performance deteriorated to the point where I was fired. Was one of the happiest days of my life!!! They still have not paid me the last ten days of my contract, but I soon realized it was a waste of time trying to get my money back. Anyways, just to let you know I think EWHA sucks big time, and that you are getting ripped off big time as well. Just in case you were wondering, my official salary was 1,900,000 won per month, but they deducted 200,000 won per month for rent. And I was working Saturdays as well. Live and learn.

Wow what a mess, they have gone through seven Directors and fire yeachers left and right. STAY AWAY! This place is a political nightmare. I have been here six months and or I would leave. Just thought I would warn those that might choose this organization. It is run by a prominant law professor whose brother left because the guy is a stuborn jxxx. His brother owns One World which is a great school. If you come here you will be sad...

If you're referring to the one in Dukso, stay the Hell away from this school!!!!!!!!! The Principal is a slave driver and will cheat you out of money any chance she can get. My former room-mate and I are currently in the middle of a contract dispute with them and they are trying to screw us out of everything. They just got two new foreign teachers last week and they just up and left in the middle of the night. They'll want you working until 10pm, but they won't tell you that until you arrive. They're full of empty promises. Oh by the way, they just switched schools this past month; they're an Ewha school now. I advise you to look elsewhere.

I feel I have been lucky to have been finally released from an Ewha ALS school after many futile meetings to negoiate matters that had been breached on my contract by the employer. I am the fifth teacher to have left our school within 4 months of being there. Some teachers fled back to their homeland, others were fired and some were released. I have been lied to, cheated out of overtime pay for several months and treated like a child. I am fortunate to have been released and work a better environment. Do not work for this school! I am an easy going Canadian with an open mind, integrity and a sense of professionalism...none of which were valued. Ally [email protected] Posted: April 28, 2002

I like to say Korea is okay, the money is good and there are lots of things to do. Although image is everything. Korea has just changed too fast for the koreans to keep up and have an identity of their own that is not based on appearance. I plan to return just not to ALS(ewha). They lack a degree of professionalism one expects for a school of this size. They pay more or less on time, but if a problem arises, good luck getting it solved in a proper or timely fashion. The foreigners at my school were used as an excuse for any problems that occurred and were treated as second rate educators and you have to work saturday. Perhaps other schools are different in ALS, but I have my doubts. Simple be cautious and ask teachers at the school you intend to go to.

The school is in Daegu, and the director there has no respect for foreigners OR the Korean teachers. Several of her teachers left. Stay away!

Are you referring to the one in the Seongseo area, run by Hillary No? I worked at THAT franchise and all I can do is to advise you against working there. A lot of teachers there are dissatisfied for various reasons, mainly because the woman is inconsiderate to the foreigners and deaf to their requests. Even though I left her school legally, she kept calling my new boss and bad-mouthing me. Not only that, after I left, she started using the spare room for noon sleepovers, to take a shower, etc, thus GREATLY inconvieniencing my former room-mate. STAY AWAY!

Please stay away from all Ewha Institutes. The C.E.O. and those who staff Head Office in Kangnam (Seoul ) are an unsavoury bunch who will lie to teachers about everything. I can tell you about the Mapo Ewha Institute, where a friend worked for one year. The information written below is only a cross-section of the stories told to me by four of the foreign teachers who worked there in 2001-2002. It is run by a Mr. C. The V.P. is M and the A.D. is J. Together, they are a despicable lot who will lie to you about anything. They cheated my buddy out of millions of won. When he complained to the government about them, they came to his apartment to, in the A.D.'s words, "kill him and make him an example for all the other foreign teachers". They did not gain enterance to his apartment and acted insanely right in front of other foreign teachers. One of the witnesses was subsequently harassed daily by J, the A.D. who tried, with one of the accountants and the V.P., for about two hours to break down the door to my friend's apartment. Obviously, they are not emotionally stable individuals. Like the other Ewha A.L.S. institutes, this one rarely pays on time. If you do sign with this motley outfit, you may end up like at least three of the other foreign teachers who have worked there in the last year: dealing with a bunch who will forge your name to a different contract after you start teaching for them, a contract that will pay less than the real one and have all sorts of other nice surprises in it. In essence, the contract is worthless and the company could not care less about its foreign staff.

Please do not use Len Gordon. His business' name is M4H Managment. He used to live on Cowie Hill in the Spryfield section of Halifax. He sent me over here to work for an Ewha A.L.S. in Mokdong and all the foreigners got ripped off for overtime. Further, I got attacked one night in a bar, stood up for myself, and subsequently received a "punishment" of being forced to wait two months for my pay. In the meantime, he totally stood up for the school, told me to "grow up and move on..." and, to add insult to injury, labeled me a "whiner" for repeatedly asking the school about my LONG OVERDUE OVERTIME PAY. Eventually, I did move on... to another school; and the guy he hooked me up to, Jimmy Seo, was given my pay from my last month at Mokdong Ewha A.L.S. and ended up keeping most of it! Nice guys, eh?! BEWARE OF LEN GORDON, REAL ESTATE AGENT AND HOGWON RECRUITER FOR WONDERLAND AND EWHA A.L.S.!!!!!

I was in Korea for two years at three different schools. According to the directors, you cannot work outside the school for private lessons, however, what they don't know won't hurt you. P.S. I worked for EWHA and I pitty you. They have you working on Saturdays, they only pay you for a 50 minute teaching hour not the ten minutes between classes, and worst of all, they have big brother video cameras in each class which the director can watch and listen.

I used to work for Ewha American Language Institute as well...that was about a year ago. I am a Korean American which means I did not have to sign a contract (THANK GOD!). I worked for the school that was located in Bucheon and I must tell you, it was a nightmare for me. I have never seen such a high rate of teachers leaving. The 'non-ethnic Korean foreigners' were unhappy, the 'kyopo' teachers were unhappy because of the unfair treatment, and the native Korean teacher just couldn't take it and took off. I don't know about the other franchises, but the one I worked for gave me SO much stress, and I was getting wrinkles (literally). It was such a mess, and the management was so shoddy, I had to leave after working there for two months (and I am not the kind of person who likes to quit.).May be it's better now...I don't know. What I know is that I felt more like a baby sitter for the kids, and quite a number of them were so rambunction and uncontrollable. I think you can do better.... You may want to ask about Ewha in other branches. Anyhow, I hope it helps.

Ehwa-Don't Go There

Ehwa-American English Language School in Haan-Dong I was the last American to teach there and if the rest of you will listen to me you won't go there. I have been back in the Good Ole' US now for 10 days, and ever so happy I made it back without a bodybag. I was lied to from the very beginning, cheated out of pay, abducted from the airport, and taken to a school to teach where I was never hired to teach. Like a fool I went along and tried to make a good thing out of something bad. After working 8 and 1/2 months, last of which I taught 47 classes a week during summer session, I was told by my boss he didn't have work for me for the next session of school and he gave me 2 weeks to evacuate the apartment. He had hired 3 new teachers and fired 3 of us that had been there the longest. It was his cheap way to avoid paying out bonus and ticket home. The good thing about Korea was I had met some very good people outside of the school who helped me get home. Without their help I am not sure what would have happened to me. As my boss even cheated me out of most of the last months wages. If you are even tempted to go to Ehwa to work please contact me and let me change your mind.

I worked in the Daejon school when it first opened in the summer of 2001. It's terrible. Cameras in every room, lies and deceit. Saturday work even though your contract says no Saturdays. You can mention P******* at the home office. She doesn't scare anyone. You have to write and grade on your own time, mid-terms and finals. Mr. Assistant principal doesn't know s*** about what is going on. Mr. Kim, the owner, is in 50-50 partnership with EWHA headquarters. They started in the summer with 6 foreigbn teachers. 4 Canadians and 2 Americans. They had 250 students, but after that, they had only 75 to 80 for the fall. They let the parents dictate how well the teachers are doing, based on asking the kiddies at home. Please e-mail me so I can get very personal about my experience. ======================================== http://www.eslcafe.com/korea/index.cgi?read=132710143835

I had the same experience in Korea and finally the director disposed of me not long before my year was up at Ehwa in Haan-Dong. It was his cheap way to get out of paying me my bonus. After teaching at a college for 13 years in the US and getting many compliments from administration, co-teachers, and students I find it hard to believe that a Korean director who can not speak English correctly can find fault with my teaching methods enough to fire me. I would suggest you get out of that school quickly and go where you are appreciated. I spent almost 9 months working in one school only to get the boot at the end.

Bob, MikyMike and Catherine are right. All EWHA/ALS schools are terrible to work at. Their head office in Seoul and especially Patricia, are the most un-organized entities in the business. I know because I got SOLD to another private hagwon. I felt like an indentured skave. The new Daejon school in which I worked, lost over 200 students between the summer session and the fall. EWHA ALS-Another dictatorship! style! Post this about Ewha please..
Main recruiting individual for this franchise is Regina Kim. They sound very promising on the telephone and even at the interview. However, as most franchises are the institutes are run by separate owners.
The one in Ulsan has a dubious director and the one in Incheon even more dubious. The head office will want you to work this way...The director has his own ideas...Lots of conflicting issues, late pay..."Oh the head office hasn't deposited the funds yet"! Or "Well I didn't agree to pay you that much"!

First timers, avoid this school
Posted By: Unknown rookie
Date: Thursday, 13 February 2003, at 9:11 p.m.
I'm writing this to warn about a school I had a bad experience at in Daegu. It is the Ewha A.L.S branch in the Songseo district. They pay on time and the nighborhood is nice. But the school does not train at all and they overspecialize the subjects. Some of the materials (ex: writing books) are hard to teach as they have no guide for the teachers. Classes are under constant surveillence which can put a lot of pressure on the first timer. Also, they care less about the teachers' opinions about the classes and more about the students' opinions of the teachers. The director also admits that they don't have enough time to train first time teachers. They also put a lot of emphasis on teachers preparing tests which equals more time in the office (without pay). One last thing, when the school loses business, they immediately terminate the least experienced teacher (my case). So if you are thinking about entering the English teaching trade in Korea, avoid this school by all possible means.

No.143 : Avoid Ewha ALS in Songseo
Name: Lone American
Date: 2003-03-10 11:16:23
View: 5
To those coming to Korea for the first time. At all possible costs, try to
avoid working for the Ewha American Language School in the Sungseo
district of Daegu. The staff is generally freindly and it pays well enough.
They also pay on time and put you in a nice room. Although my first room
constantly flooded, they put me in a new room. However, they will can you
the first chance they get if they don't like you. I was there for three months
when the Asst. Director, Scott, told me that he and the Director, "Hillary",
didn't like the way I was teaching. They should've considered that when
they hired a first-timer that they didn't bother to train. In my opinion, it was
really about the bottom line.

This school defines the word "utilitarian." The walls are plain white, no
decorations or color of any kind. The curriculum is homogenized and can
get boring after a while. Teachers are required to prepare exams, which
means unpaid office time. They give only a few minutes to prepare for
classes and they give you little, if any, break time, which is also payless. I
worked as many as 11 classes a day on a split shift during a winter
intensive session, after which I was fired. I was also give the Wed. & Sun.
off job. This isn't so much a learning enviroment for kids, as it is an
English speech factory. At each possible moment, they take away
anything to get the kids stimulated, activities, games, you name it. They
just have kids read, write and repeat words like parrots.

I can't say this for the whole chain, since I know that it's franchised. I'm
sure Ewha A.L.S. has plenty of good branches that stimulates the kids
interest and treats their teachers well. But the Sungseo branch is not the
place to go if you want to break into ESL teaching in Korea. So avoid this
school at all costs.
