The Paul Fundraising Machine Keeps Chugging
By Emily Cadei, CQ Staff

Mitt Romney and John McCain may be fighting for the front-runner mantle in the Republican presidential race, but it's Texas Rep. Ron Paul who led the field in donor contributions last quarter, according to just-released campaign finance reports. On the back of two record-breaking days of online fundraising, Paul brought in $20 million during the October-through-December period, virtually all of it from individuals.

That's twice as much as either McCain or Romney collected from individuals in the same period --
$7 million for McCain and $9 million for Romney.

Romney took in the most money overall for the fourth quarter by virtue of an $18 million loan from his personal funds. For Paul, the cash influx pushed his total receipts for the year to $28.2 million, with $7.8 million in spending money going into 2008.

Paul is likely to get another significant financial boost today, thanks to a supporter-driven fundraising initiative to honor the candidate's 51st wedding anniversary and give him an edge going into the Super Tuesday primaries next week. This is just the latest in a series of "moneybombs" planned to demonstrate support for Paul; another is targeted for April 15, tax day.

Good for Paul and his supporters. A staunch supporter of liberty and peace needs a place in every election in every country.

Is the money still being raised so that Paul can run in the general?

I haven't swung by the message boards for a few months now, but I do think that they are trying to influence debate than actually win. Many people who support Paul don't agree with much other than his staunch anti-war stance and after the racist newsletter catastrophe just resigned themselves to trying to inject sanity into the fascist war mongering debates being passed off as conservative.

Libertarians need to find a candidate that isn't a reactionary bigot.

Indeed. Libertarians are also pro immigration. Paul isn't.

So what? Proof that the presidency is not for sale if there ever was any doubt. Money matters in the race. But money does not decide the race.

Let him raise a trillion dollars in campaign contributions for all I care. He would still be shown the door and thrown out on his ass at the end of the day -- and this is as the lunatic fringe should be treated.

Passed by a Clinton rally recently. Mostly Hillary Clinton supporters. Only one other candidate's supporters were milling around on the fringe, approx. half-a-dozen of them with their posters compared to nearly a thousand waiting to hear Clinton speak, trying to force themselves and their candidate into this gathering or appear on the newsfootage, but succeeding only in appearing like freaks. Which candidate and which supporters do you think I am referring to...?

A bit of both - trying their best for a win but at the same time laying the groundwork for something other than the presidency just in case, which is why there are quite a few people that have announced runs for congress / the senate on RP's platform. Ron Paul also has a new book coming out here, currently #3 on amazon.com (it's not coming out until April though).

Opportunists. Let them sit down as a group and see if they even agree on anything other than Ron Paul struck populist paydirt and they somehow want to benefit from it in their political careers.

Once he resigns from the race, his following will fall apart via petty infighting faster than the Ross Perot/Jesse Ventura-backed Reform Party did in the 1990s...

Ron Paul is also anti-NAFTA. It kind of undermines his claims to economic fluency in my eyes.

Libertarians are free traders. Now one might be against trade deals in that they're not FREE enough. Maybe Paul uses the fine line to his advantage, letting the economic isolationists fill in the blanks. But then that makes him disingenuous. He's a bad package no matter which way you slice it.

First Lyndon LaRouche, now Ron Paul.

As I used to tell my students before they wrote their first essay test in history class, if you can find one example of something, you have proven nothing except that one existed. If you can support your position with only two examples, then you have demonstrated what may be just a coincidence. If you find 3 supports, then you are definitely onto something.

It's just a coincidence that both LaRouche and Ron Paul are Libertarians and fruitcakes. Maybe just a coincidence.

Just to clarify for those who might not know, "economic isolationism" means "nationalism," "protective tarrifs," etc.

Aren't you a Freemason?

Coincidence you cannot help but resort to ad-hominem?

And you call yourself a professor? Rolling Eyes

Small wonder the so-called "education" system lies in a shambled fraud.
