Tone can be 80% of intent and meaning I just read somewhere.
I COULD care less... but I cant be bothered to lower my level of idifference. Meaning is fine.
If you say teh Giants will win the Super Bowl and someone says "I could care less" you get the idea. You say OK not deliver a dissertation about how they REALLY are saying they COULD care less so they care. Unless you want to drink your beer glass first. |
Slice it, justify it, any way you want. Fact is, it's a mutation and misconception.
In speech, it's usually difficult to pick up, but seeing it written down is a sad state of affairs. |

| Why do "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing? |

| Non-Americans get confused with the logic of the term, "to luck-out"; they assume it's negative. |

Idiomatic expressions, such as "to luck-out," are, well. idioms.
"1. an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, as kick the bucket or hang one's head, or from the general grammatical rules of a language, as the table round for the round table, and that is not a constituent of a larger expression of like characteristics." |

Also, you were asking a question

| I think maybe it's more annoying to non-North American ears because I have never heard the mistake made by anyone but a North American. If you're used to hearing it so often, then it doesn't grate as much. |
