A friend of mine just lost her shot at a very sweet 9-5 contract near Itaewon because her school couldn't send her transcripts on time, and is now debating whether to accept a contract near Seoul National University. She asked me for advice, but I've not been here long and don't know that much about Seoul. Can anyone help?

I would be the only foreign teacher and it is located south of the han river at seoul's national university. i'm scared that i would feel isolated as i would have to commute to meet people and can you imagine what a taxi ride must cost from downtown seoul to seoul's nat. uni? (i know the subway closes at midnight on weekends). do you think i would find foreigners in my neighborhood who would want to be friends? |
Any advice for her? |

She's not worried about the contract, just the area. |

I lived about a 5 minute walk from the Seoul National University subway station for a few months, it was a pretty good area to live and I saw a lot of other foreigners around, you also have a chance to meet a lot of Koreans as there are plenty of young student types around. It isn't ideal if your goal is to hang out in Itaewon all the time, but not far from Gangnam and is a good area to live in amenity-wise. |

I used to live near SNU. The area has pluses and minuses.
On the plus side, the mountain air is cleaner than downtown and walks in the forest are really nice.
The downside is that it is about a 40 or 45 minute trip back to downtown.
The real problem isn't the subway ride, it is the bus ride from the campus to get to the subway. In the mornings the queue for the bus ip is about 100 m long. And in the evening the buses down are all full and sweaty. I think to work on campus, one would need to find a way to beat that bus system. Live nearby, park a scooter at the bottom, or work off-peak hours.
Lots of friendly Koreans, teachers and students, on the campus. Choice for foreign friends might be limited, but it is a good chance to enjoy some quiet time. |

Slightly off the topic of your question, but 9-5 really isn't a very sweet job, unless there are at least 4 months of vacation included. She should try for something 1-5. I'm assuming because you said she "lost her shot" that this new contract isn't even that good. If she has any teaching experience at all, and even possibly with no experience, she should be able to get something way better than that.
I don't know much about the SNU area except that you're more likely to get a nicer place for less money than downtown. Good luck to your friend! |

Good area I think. I lived their last year and liked it. Quiter a few foreigners and a jazz bar there were the owner has loads of good jazz CD's and is a real Jazz buff. Department store next to the station and lots of good Chinese restauranst near Bongcheon stn just walking distance. Only about 25 mins from Hongdae. |
