Okay, this is a serious discussion. No profanity or dirty words. Only proper terminology plz.

An Orgazm causes the release of endorphins into the brain. Endorphin is the chemical cousin of morphine.

So, are orgazms (sex and self-grat.) chemically addictive or not??

Let's hear your opinions, input, etc. But, you have to answer the question YES or NO and then explain.

cheers
e

I say YES, without a doubt. Several of my friends suggest it is natural part of the human experience (not addiction which is seen as negative).

Not eating food causes stomach pains in humans. Therefore I'm not hungry, I'm addicted to food. Not *using the fishing tackle* cause feelings of unease and agnst in humans. So I guess we're addicted.

Almost anything can be addictive to the right person.

Well, you can not spank the monkey and hold in stuff meant to leave the body

And you can also not sneeze and hold in stuff meant to leave the body.

Both options will make you cross-eyed and funny in the head.

So I say you ask yourself the question: WWDD?

Yes, and particularly emotional states, due to the body becoming accustomed to and dependant on the biochemisty associated with that emotional state.

Sexual arousal and release probably releases a particularly potent chemical coc ktail which a person could definitely become addicted to.

This is explained quite well on the cellular level in the rather amusing wedding scene in "What the *bleep* do we know".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkYUtZIo0LI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_DbZ83BcJk

"Think about this: heroin uses the same receptor mechanisms on our cells that our emotional chemicals use" (06:02, second clip)

So yeah, sex can be very addictive, especially self gratification since there are no other parties involved.

As for whether or not such an addiction is harmful, conventional western wisdom would probably say, there's nothing wrong, good for stress relief etc.

Chinese Medicine, Taoism etc take a different view. From a chi perspective, excessive sexual activity is a waste of energy. Reproduction is a high priority for the body, and the "generative energy" comes from your most precious energy stores, the kidney energy, your "original chi". (You're born with it, and when it runs out, you die.)

It makes sense to me. Even from a purely physical perspective each sperm has a huge amount of carefully encoded genetic material, the creation of which uses up energy and nutrients that might have otherwise been put to use repairing or upkeeping other parts of the body.

Since it takes three days to recharge after ejaculation, if you're losing a load more often than that, then there is a constant drain on vital nutrients and energy. You might be constantly in an energy- and nutrient-deprived state, but not know any better cos it's been so long since you went three days without rippin the top off! You could be pleasuring yourself to an early grave.

With that in mind, I'm definitely giving up w@nking... tomorrow.

As an aside, according to Taoist energetic theory, while men lose energy by having sex, women do not. Instead they lose energy while menstruating. Both blood and semen are rich in Yin energy, the solid "fuel" for Yang's less substantial "fire".

What to do, guys? If you're under thirty - nothing. The fountain of youth still springs from your loins. After that, maybe consider becoming a less profligate m@sturbator (easier said than done, I know).

You could always go the whole hog in the opposite direction and cultivate the Taoist lovemaking techniques that divert the sexual energy up the spine thus avoiding.. spillover. That would involve a serious commitment to building up your chi and your sensitivity to it, but the payoff would be huge for you and your partner.

Here's my opinion, based on four years working in wilderness therapy with lots of clients with histories of serious drug use, relationship addiction, video game addiction, eating disorders, rage-aholics, etc.

The term addiction is best defined through context rather than a study of brain chemistry. That is to say, addiction is defined by it's impact on other aspects of an individuals life. You can't dispute dependency for certain things based on how they effect brain chemistry. But is that relevent? No, Because everything effects brain chemistry. Addiction is almost always seen in a negative light and that is because whatever it is that a person is doing or consuming is negatively impacting the rest of their life (or often how their life is perceived from within a specific social context). So, when confronted with/ trying to advise clients struggling with whether or not they are addicts (whether or not sobriety is their only solid option) the best advice i can give is - how is it effecting the rest of your life? how does it impact your goals? The answer to these questions is individual, not based on the substance. People need to take responsibility for their actions instead of saying it was the drug that made them do it. Balance is the key to health - life without regular sex sorta sucks.

If the OP is concerned about getting a regular dose of endorphins they're going to have avoid anything that causes pleasure - it's the same endorphins whether you eat something that tastes good, get some exercise or have an orgasm.

On a more fun side not - Orgasm, in males, releases a significant amount of melatonin in the brain. Melatonin is the primary chemical involved in falling asleep. You know what other activity releases a lot of melatonin - watching TV. Research suggests that watching TV induces the same brain chemistry as is seen 10-15 seconds before one normally falls asleep. Your brain is maintained that way the entire time your watching TV - what a disgusting and unhealthy drug addiction.

You know what causes a similar brain chemistry to orgasm for women - chocolate.

An addiction causes negative results. So, even if you really really want to do funky stuff and think about it a lot it's only an addiction if it has a negative impact on your health.

Same rules apply for heroin. Even if you cannot stop yourself from doing it, it's only an addiction if it negatively impacts your life. I can't stop visiting eslcafe.com but it's not an addiction!

Most of the NO posters wrote paragraphs because they couldn't bring themselves to type "NO".

The Yes folks were more direct.

NO = 6 posts
YES = 3 posts

Everything in moderation.

If I don't save something for my wife every few days, I feel it hurts our relationship.
