I'm finishing my PS contract at the end of this month. I've decided not to renew my contract with my school so I'm returning home.

Just today, my co-teacher informed me that the school has ran out of funds this month so they will only reimburse half of my airfare and remaining half will be reimbursed next month in March. Also, instead of paying me my severance before I leave, she said the school will pay the severance in March as well.

I know they're lying. How can PS run out of fund?

What are my options here?

The head of the program, immediately, and if there are no results quickly, the labour board.

when you started, weren't you given a number or email address of someone with the school board to contact about any issues?
are you with GEPIK?

Ok, after another bitch fest with my co-teacher. They've agreed to pay my full airfare.

However, they again told me some BS about not paying the severance before I leave the country by pointing out the labor law. They are saying that the severance can be paid withing 14 days after I finish my contract at which time I won't be in the country. Rolling Eyes

Ring the co-ordinator of your district.

They should have no problems paying you out, in full and on-time as they have been allocated that money from the provincial education board.

I have a suspicion somebody is trying(or already has) to pocket the money owed to you. It isn't the first time it would have happened.

I'd take a small trip to Japan, do some sightseeing, and then come back on a tourist visa and do some R&R at a cheap motel near the school.

Also, make sure the severance pay is correct. If you did any extra work in December, January or this month, it will be higher than your basic salary.

Yeah, I would but why waste my money and time for the severance pay?

I suspect that if I leave the country, I would never see my severance money unless I return to Korea.

According to my co-teacher, this is coming from the education office so I've asked for the contact information. Let see what happens...

PM me if you want to know where this is happening.

"According to my coteacher..." NO! Sit the jerk down and call the school inspector at the regional office of education responsible for your school district. If you fail to get the truth from that person, then call the coordinator at the provincial/metropolitan office of education responsible for foreign teachers and demand they get the school hot on telling you the truth and paying you properly.

I think they are right about the 14 day thing, though. Like the above poster, too, don't listen to the school anymore. Go district.
