Supporters of 3 candidates have set up tables this week on my university's main drag. They are:

Ron Paul
Hillary
Obama

Hillary's supporters are rather meager. Haven't seen more than 3 at a time at the table, and they're always female. They have one sign up and aren't handing out anything. Obama's table is very active, handing out all kinds of stuf, and his posters are everywhere on campus. Ron Paul supporters are fewer in number but as active as Obama's. I have to admire their dedication.

Anyway, my university doesn't reflect the general populace whatsoever (I'm the only McCain supporter I know on campus), but interesting to see RP's pull on young people.

That's one of the big reasons why Ron Paul is my favorite and Obama next. Their candidacies have an effect on democracy itself that the others don't, in showing that a person with sound ideas (Ron Paul) or enough passion and motivation (Obama) can enter the political sphere, and win. One unseen factor in politics are all the people that have good ideas, would serve their countries well and want to participate but decide not to on the grounds that they probably wouldn't win, that the field is fixed, etc. So a victory for either or both would bring out a lot of new people into the field that wouldn't have considered participating before.

A Hillary and McCain victory would further cement the impression that the way to win in politics is either to have good connections (i.e. be married or be someone's son), or hang around for a long time and pretend you like people that you actually don't (McCain after losing in 2000) in order to curry their favor later on. McCain might be a maverick on the inside still, but he's obviously made the choice to keep silent on what he really thinks (as if he really cares about whether someone mentioned a timetable for Iraq), and nobody can tell if that habit would stay with him or not if he were to become president.

What's your take on why Perot quit at that point?

I think it was something about a Republican plot to kidnap his daughter. The man is authentically nuts; it's a testament to how hated Bush 41 and Clinton were that he got 20% of the vote. Perot would've been among the worst Presidents in history if he'd been able to actually get anything done -- which he wouldn't have, which ironically might have made him among the best Presidents in history.

I get your point of irony, but regardless of what kind of president he would have been, I think just having a third party in there would have had a salutary effect.

Wow, IGTG!
You were all excited a week ago over Paul's soon-to-be victory in Maine.
All the while, you knew what voting machines they were using there.
Why did you get your hopes up then?
What if Paul won, would the election still be fraudulent?
Keep on trolling!

enns,

Because IGTG would have to be using logic instead of lunacy. Of course she knew voting machines were used there. Everything is a conspiracy with her.

The important news from Maine is this: Ron Paul has over 35% of the delegates to the state convention, so far. In May, after the race has boiled down to two, either McCain or Romney along with Ron Paul, the national delegates will be chosen. At that point, Ron Paul can win a majority of Maine's delegates by picking up support from the Huckabee supporters and some of the others. If Romney has dropped out, Ron Paul should take it.

The same will happpen in Nevada and Louisiana, when the delegates are actually chosen. With Romney and Huckabee out, Ron Paul's second place could turn into first when the delegates are actually chosen.

In Iowa, the Huckabee people will not go to McCain, Ron Paul can win there as well, when the delegates are actually chosen.

This race is still wide open. Ron Paul destroyed Giuliani (or you could say that Giuliani made such a fool out of himself attacking Ron Paul that he destroyed himself), and now Ron Paul has beaten McCain in Maine. Huck should win a few tomorrow, but even if he does, will he do well enough to keep going?
