Are there any EPIK people who can describe their living situation? I'll appreciate anyone's input!

Roommates? Apartment? House? Flat? DORMS?

What's it like?

Thanks!
Erica

That's probably a bit like asking what are dogs like in North America. Depends on the owner. I would imagine they range from hell holes to untold luxury.

impossible to determine as Mindmetto says. i would hazzard at a guess that the general standard is better than hawgwans although that, as with most things, doesnt really say a lot.

Ok??

I'm pretty sure its not impossible to determine. And saying that the apartments vary is pretty much stating the obvious.

I just was asking people who work for EPIK to describe the places where they live. For example "I live in a studio apartment by myself" or "I have 2 roommates who are also teachers, we share a house".

I'm about to move there and I'm curious as to where other EPIK employees are living.

Expect a small studio-size apartment with basic furnishings included. Perhaps something slightly larger if placed in a rural area.

Comfortable enough for one individual.

EPIK doesn't really give you a choice where you teach, right? Normally I'd say talk to someone at the school you're slated to work at about their place but if you're parachuted in at the last minute (and trust me you are from reports, some schools don't even know you're coming) I would hazard a guess there's no way to even get an idea. In big cities one might expect something small, not on the newish side. In smaller cities, you might expect a nice modern place.

I work for EPIK .. I chose the housing allowance. The people in the richer provinces get nicer apartments (even air con) the people in the poorer areas have a crap shoot. If they stick you in a home stay for the first week be thankful, that means you will be moving into a renovated or new villa. If they stick you in some closet don't accept it.. You can make it very clear to them that you will only stay for one month and then find your own dive at 300,000 per month.

Thanks for the info! ^^^^

Will 300,000 be enough to cover the rent or did you have to pay for some out of pocket?

Rent isn't the issue.... the key money is....

For no key money and 300k per month you can rent a closet with shared bathroom and shared cooking facilities.

With 5 million won for key money and 300k per month you can get a 15'x15' single room with private shower/toilet combo and 2 burner gas stove.

With 10 million won for key money and 300k per month you can get a 15'x30' officetel with private bathroom and shower stall (no tub) but you don't need to sit on the toilet to shower.

With 100 million won for key money and 300k per month you can get an OLDER 2 bedroom apartment in the poorer neighborhoods.

With 200 million won for key money and 300k per month you can get a decent 2 or 3 bedroom apartment in all but the high rent districts.

Double those key money/deposit prices for Seoul.

I could also make a thread (such as this one) for people who have worked for EPIK or currently work for EPIK to reply with a simple description of their living situations. I'm positive that it won't guarantee where I will be living, but I'd hope that the information I would gather from other workers might give me a little bit more information about what to expect or what not to expect.

For example- If 20 people responded to me and told me that they all have roommates, I might be able to figure that there may be a higher chance that I will get a roommate.

I can definitely understand that the conditions vary-- and similarly what kinds of dogs are on an entire continent (?). Thank you for pointing that out to me though.

It's reasonable to want to know what the average quality of apartments is like. It's unusual to find a messageboard where people don't leap at the chance to share this kind of thing, but I guess it's like posting a picture of yourself - people (like your employer who is paying for the apartment) will be able to trace it back to you.

I'm not asking for photos of apartments or addresses-- I wouldn't post that info either. I honestly didn't think that my original question probed for any of that information. I wasn't even looking for complaints-- just a basic description like those found in apartment search magzines.

I def. wasn't looking for cynical responses but that seems to be the issue here. Its cool though because people can post what they want and respond the way they want.

Oh well thanks for the info.

Your original question may seem quite natural to someone who has never been here but for those who are here it is akin to, "How high is up?"

In EPIK, GEPIK and SMOE/ETIS I don't think there are any FLIs who have to share their apartment. All of us have a private residence BUT the quality and type of residence will vary GREATLY depending on where you are placed.

Housing costs (deposits) are massive for even small apartments in Seoul and the bigger cities so the housing tends to be smallish. Most PUBLIC schools provide something along the line of a bachelor suite.

Out in the country the housing can get much cheaper and the apartment can get nicer, IF there are apartments available in your area. In some cases in rural areas it ends up being the equivalent of a basement suite under someone's home or on their rooftop just because there is nothing else available.

While I understand your wanting to know about your new living arrangements your original question really is not possible to give a great answer to.
