If necessary for human survival, killing dogs is acceptable - but human flesh is reportedly tastier! (especially when washed down with a nice Chianti ...) |

Ok, this is the first time I have seen this thread (Annie doesn't tell me everything....).
I would obviously have posted earlier if I'd known it was here. I used to use Dave's quite a lot for adoptable dogs and cats (with a lot of success I might add & had a really good response rate from people wanting to adopt).
A few people have asked for photos of the dogs still at the shelter - I am going tomorrow (as usual - I take adopters, fosterers & volunteers to Daejeon from Seoul every Saturday). There are individual photos of over 100 of the shelter dogs at the below links (I will post probably more photos in the next few days):
http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/forums/showthread.php?t=129
http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/forums/showthread.php?t=245
As for the previous posts in this thread:
Bobster: I can partly understand where you are coming from I guess, although we didn't start out seeking donations - people just offered to help financially once we started the regular rescue work. I should add I have never directed any offer of donations to any personal account (I thought this would be a really bad idea & couldn't see how that would give anyone any confidence the money would be used for its intended purpose) so we arranged for the vet in Daejeon who does most of the veterinary work for the rescue dogs to quote his account details (which made sense given that was where the money would go anyway).
Also, if you look at the early posts in this thread & our website (and anything else I have posted here on Dave's) you will see my telephone and email contact details posted everywhere. So it didn't occur to me that anyone would question the legitimacy of what we are trying to do when anyone was welcome to call me directly to discuss what is happening and also to come down to the shelter on our weekly trips to see for themselves.
Mr Pink / Fishead Soup / djsmnc - people like you are precisely why I stopped using Dave's. |

Absolutely. Good idea.
Especially, be sure to read the "About Us" page.
What I'm noticing - Karen, Chaitanya, Annie, Piotr, Mark - none of these people have last names. They have no office, no mailing address, no physical place in the world where I can walk up to them, look 'em in the eye, and shake their hand. At least, none of this info is included on their site.
Ah, but they WILL accept my money - happy to oblige in THAT area.
And still no sign of annie or shannonnation on this thread she started ...
Until she comes around, I've taken some good advice and startedc a different discussion.
Causes Worth Our Time and $ - Groups Doing Important Work
See ya there. |
I have met both Tim and Annie: ironically, you couldn't get two more real people than them
Anyway,. I also know the vet where the donations go and have heard that Dr. talk about what the funds are being used for.... |

Hi everyone,
"the Bobster" and myself solved any doubt / misunderstanding really smoothly, so let's keep it that way... His questions were fair, and now we agreed on the fact that people do need to be careful with whom they deal with (especially when it comes to money).
So all is fine; let's just keep fighting for the dogs!
Thanks! |

What's wrong with eating the dogs? There are starving Koreans all over the place...better to eat them then kill them IMO. |
That's just gross. Eating live dogs without killing them first. |

This article gives more detailed background and some good analysis of the problem and why some concerned expats (and Koreans) are seriously trying to help - with a sense of urgency:
http://english.ohmynews.com/articleview/article_view.asp?article_class=2&no=381630&rel_no=1
Like "Bobster", I was initially skeptical when I first heard that a group was collecting donations to rescue dogs and cats in Korea (seemed like too good an idea to scam money ...) but - having met some to the people involved - I'm impressed that they are very sincere and competent to do whatever can be practically done to help.
Anyone who can adopt a poor dog is urged to contact them, and anyone who would like to donate to their worthy cause should do so without reservation.
Like I've mentioned, "Seoul Vegetarian Club" president "kermo" has agreed that at our February 16 gathering (hosted by "littlelisa") donations can be made to help the rescue group (referred to in the article.)
Although it's a "potluck vegetarian dinner", non-vegetarians are welcome to attend - if you can't bring a vegetarian item (like fruit or drink or salad) just bring a donation (any amount) - and all proceeds will be turned over to representatives of this group committed to helping the plight of poor animals.

I saw on ESLKorea (Yahoo Group) that the deadline was the end of February for the shelter's closing.
Sorry I can't adopt a pet; apartment rules state no pets. But I will mention it to my circle of allies. One of them might be willing to assist. |

Hi all
Couple of videos for those of you that haven't been to the shelter.
The below was taken in June last year (when there were around 210 dogs at the shelter)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqX9Jc5aRBY&feature=related
Contrast this with the below which was taken last weekend (2 Feb) on our weekly Saturday trip to take adopters, fosterers and volunteers to the shelter from Seoul:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GNTfHdXMI
We did a headcount on Saturday and there are still 128 beautiful dogs there looking for permanent homes. Anyone who is interested in adopting. fostering or just coming along to volunteer (the dogs really appreciate volunteers taking them for walks, they don't get much exercise otherwise as Mrs Jung is flat out trying to look after them all) please contact me at [email protected] or my mobile 010 8940 5233. |

Although the "veggie club" potluck gathering scheduled for Feb. 16 had to be canceled because of venue problems, it will be rescheduled in the near future - and "kermo" may post information on the club websites for those who desire to help out Animal Rescue Korea's volunteer efforts.
In the meantime, I'm gonna meet with one of animal rescue group's organizers, "timvas", at the Ashoka Indian restaurant (3rd floor, Hamilton Hotel, Itaewon) this Sunday (Feb. 17) at 12:30 pm.
There will likely be at least one-or-two other volunteers there also.
Anyone interested in adopting a dog - or donating toward vet care - is welcome to join us at the Ashoka. Just post here - or PM me. |

I met with Tim and a couple volunteers today.
Funds are especially needed to treat dogs with medical ailments that require extensive treatments and quaratine periods.
Here's a fun way to help the cause -
attend the benefit music/comedy show ... (organized by Animal Rescue Korea volunteer, "Maggie")
at ROCKY MOUNTAIN TAVERN (in Itaewon)
on FRIDAY, FEB. 22 (from 9pm on)
Featured acts:
40 DAYS
THE MECHANICAL SEALS
SEOUL CITY IMPROV
Admission:
12,000 won (2000 won discount with flier)
All proceeds will be for the dog shelter in Daejeon
(There reportedly will also be a "great raffle prize"...)
From the descriptions given here, you can probably also see hockey games on a big screen there somewhere...

This sounds like a great way to have some good fun and help people out who are trying to make the world a little better - heck, most times I find myself in Itaewon, I can't honestly say I'm even making the world a little better even for myself ... judging by the state of my head the next day, most likely worse, in fact.
RT, will there be any volunteers from Animal Rescue to take our donations if we feel like dropping a little coin over and above the admission price?
Sounds like a good thing going on. Let's all help good things continue to happen. |
