Right back at you. For my part, I cannot fathom a guy preaching about "the right thing to do" seeing others on soap boxes.

My comment on the thread is this: this is one of the things that happen in and result from such a protracted war as the one we currently find ourselves in. It should surprise no one. The solution, as theorists have known since Sun Tzu, is to avoid protracted wars. No policymaking or mentalhealth care can overcome this. No more no less. Especially as some of these attempts are likely people not actually serious about suiciding, but rather desperate to get a discharge...

And this...

Quote:
According to Army statistics, the incidence of U.S. Army soldiers attempting suicide or inflicting injuries on themselves has skyrocketed in the nearly five years since the start of the Iraq war.

This will only get worse as the guerrilla war drags on.

There are probably a good many things you can't fathom.

I'm talking about society's need to take better care of soldiers, both during their term of service and after.

I agree with this. The miltary should make *thorough, ongoing* psychological counseling mandatory for every soldier who comes back from deployment. Along with identifying those most at risk, it'll also remove the stigma of having sought it--one of the biggest reasons why a soldier doesn't seek it out on his/her own. A previously deployed soldier without psychological counseling on his/her record should raise questions about their mental fitness, not vice versa!
Unfortunately the culture of macho "I can handle it" still pervades--when it's clear a lot of them can't.

Are you running for president now? Because McCain has you beat on this issue. Or are you trying to outdo Twain's "War Prayer?" Because you would not have a prayer. And also please show me anyone, anywhere in the American political system who disagrees with this solemn sermon.

And, finally, what is the point in introducing such a story and then wagging your finger while preaching about the right thing to do and how things should be to this community of fifteen or so regular readers and posters...?

I have no idea what any of you are on about. I'm talking about the social responsibility to take care of troops and provide psychological treatment to those who need it.

Perhaps all three of you need to get off your soap boxes and stay on the topic in this thread.

My apologies.

Why are you apologizing?

Twiggy introduced this story and presented his mock concern merely as a pretext to ridicule his "Kool-aid drinkers." And Ya-ta Boy has contributed the violins.

Posters and their ambitions and/or games on this board. Go figure.

Yeah, I thought the overt politicization of this issue by TWG was borderline trolling.

So we respond to a issue raised by YOU in YOUR post and WE are off topic?

Hilarious. YOU were the one who bought up the issue of a "peace treaty". I merely responded pointing out why this is a non-starter. You then claim I'm going off topic when the fact it was on topic and perfectly relevant to YOUR mention of signing a peace treaty. Rolling Eyes
