I'm dating a Korean guy. Things are great between us and I know I want to marry him. The only thing is that his 1st generation family members aren't cool with me. This is something that competely shocked me at first but the longer we are together (almost 5 years) and the more I learn, the more I respect their views. It is because of this reason that I have chosen Korea as the country where I want to teach English. I feel like I can get more in touch with the culture this way and be able to understand them better.

Jesus dating 5 years and the family still ain't cool with it? That's a drag I somehow always figured that it was just the Korean women that took a lotta heat for dating outside the race. Hope they come around soon for ya ^^

Thanks. I'm not worried about it too much. We're just covering all of our bases so that things go smoothly (as much as we can control).

But yeah I def. wouldn't be in this relationship if I didn't 100% trust him or have confidence that things are going to work out... but I guess that is how any relationships should go.

Well, I'm hoping that the family looks at you going to Korea and sees how much of an effort you're trying to make. (Well, on top of the 5 years). Hell if I were them that'd make a huge impression on me.

Just don't start to want him to dress like some of those guys in Seoul ;p

I am. We met here, he's the only son. His family was also not cool, but they seem to have come around.

Sure as hell didn't take five years. I am not that patient and neither is he. We would have just said screw them long before that.

OP, what do you want to know?

To better describe things, he's Korean-American. His parents moved to the US before he was born...

... and I think that some families are more strict than others. Luckily my boyfriend is the 2nd son and his big bro has a Korean wife and a son-- but I will be the only non-Korean person in his entire family.

I guess I'm wondering what Korean guys are like and what are the best places to meet quality guys.
I taught at a summer camp in Korea for only 3 weeks and I was really surprised by how much the Korean college guys flirted with us. It's obvious why white guys like Korean girls. They are so tiny and feminine compared to us white chicks. I would think that we would seem huge and hair to Korean guys. But, maybe its just the facination with the unknown that happens between many different cultures.
How do Korean guys treat you?

No offense, but there's nothing for you to understand. It's their job. His family moved to America. The country is good enough for them but the people aren't? That's bigotted.

Well to say that *Korean men* treat women a certain way would be a complete generalization. I've dated a few Asian guys and they've all treated me differently- nothing which reflected on their race.

I'm not really sure how to answer your question.

Well thats your opinion-- I don't feel the same way.

Have you noticed any general cultural differences between Korean and white guys? I sure did when I dated a Mexican in Mexico. I know that generalizations are by nature false, but different cultures still have different dating norms.

Indeed, all families are different. I just don't have the patience to be with a man who, after five years, isn't willing to man up, say screw them and no longer care about their opinion.

I haven't seriously dated enough Koreans to be able to compare. Laughing

As far as how "they treat their women", no I didn't see any differences. The difference that I am currently experiencing is the type of relationships they have with their parents.
