|

Anyone up for attending? Hahaha. Just joking.
Saipan, the largest island of the US territory called the "Northern Mariana Islands" (also commonly refered to by its legal name of the
"Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands," or "CNMI" for short)
might be hosting an "interesting" conference -- a marijuana conference!
Could this be the work of Canadians? I know there are a lot of Canadians in Saipan. Marijuana, and are other such drugs, are legal in Canada.

Saipan May Host Marijuana Conference
By Gemma Q. Casas
Variety News Staff
CALIFORNIA-BASED groups seeking to legalize the use of marijuana in the United States are planning to hold a major conference on Saipan.
The administration welcomes the idea, saying it could generate publicity for the islands.
Press Secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. said they cannot prevent the groups from holding their conference on island. We welcome anybody who wants to hold a conference here; whether it be to discuss marijuana or not. We want to attract conferences in the CNMI because conferences are good for tourism, Reyes told Variety.
If these people want to come here and hold the conference, then the administration welcomes them. The CNMI government and this administration is open to outside people, from California or wherever if they want to hold a conference, he added.
The groups, which Reyes did not identify, have made contacts with Attorney General Matthew Gregory. Reyes said although Gregory is privy to the groups plan to hold a conference on Saipan, it doesnt mean that the Attorney Generals Office or the administration support legalizing marijuana.
The AG may have been privy to some of the contacts but that doesnt mean that hes endorsing it or anything but our position is were open to conferences because conferences are good for tourism, said Reyes.
Thats going to bring publicity to the islands. We may be covered by Fox News or CNN. Seriously, thats free publicity. When people come here for any kind of conference, they would rent hotel rooms, buy food, spend money on restaurants. They would buy gas, shop. Spend money in our economy, he added.
The press secretary said there have been previous attempts to legalize marijuana in the commonwealth but all failed. Theres no move right now to legalize marijuana. This administration and the community may not be interested but its been brought up before by our own people here, he said.
Several groups in California are advocating for the legalization of marijuana use both for medicinal and recreational purposes.
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws is one of the oldest of these groups, having been established in 1972.
NORML supports the removal of all criminal penalties for the private possession and responsible use of marijuana by adults, including its cultivation for personal use.

Good quality marijuana is cheap and easily available, but it certainly is not legal. |

You'd better stay away from that stuff.
Smoking marijuana gives you a MUCH BIGGER chance of getting cancer than smoking tabacco!

Cannabis bigger cancer risk than cigarettes: study Tue Jan 29, 4:44 AM ET
Smoking a joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer risk, scientists in New Zealand have found, as they warned of an "epidemic" of lung cancers linked to cannabis.
Studies in the past have demonstrated that cannabis can cause cancer, but few have established a strong link between cannabis use and the actual incidence of lung cancer.
In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal, the scientists said cannabis could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco as its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes.
The method of smoking also increases the risk, since joints are typically smoked without a proper filter and almost to the very tip, which increases the amount of smoke inhaled. The cannabis smoker inhales more deeply and for longer, facilitating the deposition of carcinogens in the airways.
"Cannabis smokers end up with five times more carbon monoxide in their bloodstream (than tobacco smokers)," team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, said in a telephone interview.
"There are higher concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke ... what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on cannabis when there is so much done on tobacco."
The researchers interviewed 79 lung cancer patients and sought to identify the main risk factors for the disease, such as smoking, family history and occupation. The patients were questioned about alcohol and cannabis consumption.
In this high-exposure group, lung cancer risk rose by 5.7 times for patients who smoked more than a joint a day for 10 years, or two joints a day for 5 years, after adjusting for other variables, including cigarette smoking.
"While our study covers a relatively small group, it shows clearly that long-term cannabis smoking increases lung cancer risk," wrote Beaseley.
"Cannabis use could already be responsible for one in 20 lung cancers diagnosed in New Zealand," he added.
"In the near future we may see an 'epidemic' of lung cancers connected with this new carcinogen. And the future risk probably applies to many other countries, where increasing use of cannabis among young adults and adolescents is becoming a major public health problem."

Study Finds No Cancer-Marijuana Connection

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect." |
