when i think of all the sarcastic, rude, bitter comments that i've seen here, the first thing i think of is that these people are working in korea as foreign teachers and affecting the ways koreans think about foreigners/foreign teachers/westerners/americans, whatever. i know some of these people chose korea because of the high salary. i almost wish koreans would offer less money so that these people would be less likely to come.
it's true there has been all kinds of mistreatment towards teachers, but the teachers haven't been perfect either.
i met some hagwon owners who told me they hired a teacher for a year who was rude to the students, was only there for the money and caused a lot of students to quit. after he finished they decided to have a different kind of hagwon because they didn't want to hire a foreign teacher again. of course that's their side of the story only, but i wonder how many other hagwons have made the same decision.
anyway, for so many reasons, it bothers me to think that there are so many people like this working in korea. |

It bothers me, too. Although Korea did drive me up the wall a little when I was there so I can understand a little. What really bothers me is the number of posts on this forum at the moment trying to 'prove' Korean insecurity, and going off-topic to lambast Korea for not being as important or powerful as other countries. This kind of talk makes it very, very difficult for westerners in Korea. If the people writing these comments are not already aware, the site gets read by Koreans every day! The people writing these comments should take a long hard look at how their actions make westerners look. |

-if the comments of some individuals on a messageboard can influence the lives of all foreigners here...we're all screwed because reading the comments posted on anyone of the korean-english language papers indicate we are all in trouble anyway.
-In other words, the negativity on daves will not increase the attitude CERTAIN people have to foreigners in this country. Mr. Lee Myong-Bak with his global korean vision is going to do more to improve foreigner-korean relations than anything since the world cup. Just a hunch though.
-For the record, how many guys here have yelled at a girl for having a korean boyfriend? a few crack-pots maybe. How many korean guys have yelled at us for having korean girlfriends(or even just being seen in public with one.) a lot of us.
-Your attempts to make everything all smoothed over maybe noble but worthless. |

I agree with the OP.
There's a lot of bitterness on these boards; it can't be helping people, even if not a single Korean were to read the boards. |

$2000/month might have been good money say, 10 years ago. How can anyone say this is a "high" salary in this day and age?

(1) The people posting to these boards do not reperesent the foreigners here in Korea. They don't even represent a large minority of foreigners teaching here in Korea.
(2) Even if people are a little aggressive here, most KEEP it here and are able to function in actual society like real people, not the whingy psychos some come across as.
(3) If there are hoards of alleged peanut gallery Koreans reading this board, why would I care. When I see the terrible way we get treated sometimes (denied pension, evicted without notice, not allowed international ATM cards, a host of other impositions forced upon us solely because we are not Korean), where are they? I don't see them trying to fix the injustices we encounter. I don't see them lining up to make Korea a more foreigner-friendly place. If they're not part of the solution, then they're part of the problem. *beep* them. |

It is not a high salary whatsoever, it is a grand (UK sterling) a month which would not entice any qualified teacher from the UK. My sister is a primary school teacher on 24 grand a year. (whose salary rises per annum) The Koreans are commited capitalists and they are aware of the truism 'you get what you pay for'
Make the standards higher, I'm all for it. You would get less teachers or the hagwon owners are going to have to shell out more - you can't have it both ways.

Again, because of the low salary, you are getting people with no experience of teaching thus you are getting a comprimised low quality product, what do you think is going to happen when you get a youngster straight out of uni who has never had a proper job before - never mind a teaching job - and put them in front of 15 screaming brats to try and teach them English.

Again, you pay peanuts - you get monkeys. Get the hagwon owner to email me and I will put him in touch with my sister, she'll want over 4 million won a month minimmum, would they be interested? Nah, I didn't think so.

was only there for the money |
So what?
Most Koreans who are comitted capitalists are able to appreciate working in a country to make some money.

I think a lot of hagwon owners think they can fly someone half way around the world and treat them like shite without adapting their ways to having a western employee on the payroll, it happened to me when I first got here, my boss adapted and now we are all making their buisness work. Some hagwon owners can't do that and they in the end lose out. If they want to change their buisiness into a Chinese hagwon so they can shaft and underpay their employees then bully for them!

Bad apples everywhere - I'm sure a lot of the EFL industry here is populated by tossers - that I have no doubt.
However who has the whip hand?
That's right, the Koreans.
Pay more and you might be able to demand more of the people coming to work over here.
It is really simple economic sense. |
