With an F visa there wouldn't even be any issues about making cash on the side with immigration.

Indeed. I am thinking of doing that myself. Not really a business in the proper sense, but a home tech service.

I should just put something to that effect in my sig.

Sure. I know I'm confident enough to build a high-end PC in about 1 hour. Then about 1 hour of OS and software install.

Modern PC's are Lego! A little common sense is all you need. There is a bit of finesse when it comes to applying the thermal compound correctly. But even that's easy after the first time.

Of course, if you want to overclock to the max..........that's a different story. A black art indeed. But a minimal overclock is childsplay if you do a couple of hours research first.

I'm sure one thing that holds people back is the fear of messing something up that will ruin the system because of inexperience. I know that's what's holding me back. I want someone to help me build a machine first so I can watch it, then do it on my own.

To be honest, I'd be completely cool doing everything, except putting the CPU and motherboard together. That's where I'd be nervous and probably mess up.

BTW my old memory kinda sucked and had developped issues. So I got 4GB OCZ - why not. However, since XP only recognizes like 3GB and change, and I said that I wasn't ready to learn Vista yet, I should go to XP 64 bit.

I'm worried. He says he can get me a cracked copy for free. But will I have trouble upgrading and getting service packs?

Even if that is no problem, will the OS be unstable or buggy etc.... Should I just stay with my original 32 bit XP Pro with original discs until I feel ready to migrate to 64 bit Vista?

If you are going to go 64 bit, go Vista. SP1 is in manufacturing now. Early March...

Yes, but since Vista does run on Dx 9 cards, I don't think it really matters. It's not like he's losing anything.

You seem to be checking the wrong things.

For the next 3-4 months I'm going to be pressed for time and not gaming much. Even if I can run Vista, I'm just not up for learning the ins and outs of a new OS - I barely know windows.

So basically, I don't even need 64 bit XP. But I might as well *IF* it is pretty much no problem and no change from 32 bit XP - at least from the usr's perspective.

If XP 64 is gonna cause me any headaches then I'd rather stick with XP 32 and go to Vista 64 in 6 months when I upgrade vid cards too and have more time.
