Quote:
Bob Knight, the winningest NCAA men's division I basketball coach in history, has retired as Texas Tech's coach effective immediately.

Knight, 67, won his 902nd game Saturday when the Red Raiders downed Oklahoma State. He will be replaced by his son, Pat. Knight informed athletic director Gerald Myers of his decision Monday morning.

Knight won three national titles at Indiana, in 1976, '81 and '87. In all, he took the Hoosiers to 24 NCAA tournament appearances and reached the Final Four two other times.

During his tenure at Texas Tech, Knight was 138-82, and he led the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament in four of his six seasons, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2005. The Red Raiders are 11-8 this season and 3-3 in the Big 12, tied for sixth in the conference with Oklahoma.

Knight is one of six men who have played and coached in the Final Four. He played for Ohio State when the Buckeyes reached the Final Four in 1960, '61 and '62. He and Dean Smith are the only mean who have played and coached for a national champion.

Knight's three national titles are tied for third-most, behind John Wooden's 10 and Adolph Rupp's four. Mike Krzyzewski, who played for Knight at Army, also has three titles. Krzyzewski began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Indiana under Knight in 1974.

Knight's five Final Four appearances are tied for sixth all-time.

He also coached U.S. teams to gold medals in the 1979 Pan American Games and the 1984 Olympics.

Knight perhaps is as well-known for his temper and behavior as he is for his win total. He was fired at Indiana on Sept. 10, 2000, by then-IU president Myles Brand for what Brand termed a continuing pattern of "defiant and hostile" behavior.

Knight always has taken great pride in the academic achievement of his players, and during his coaching career, which began in 1965 at Army, all but four of his four-year players completed degrees, a ratio of nearly 98 percent.

He did something wrong and someone's probably blackmailing him with it.
Reporters should hound/stalk him for a couple days until he throws a chair and caves to the pressure.

Oh Bobby...

I went to Texas Tech while he was there. It's a shame he's leaving, he did great things.

A Knight's Tale: Tech library honors coach Knight for donations, generosity
By: Elliot Cochran
Posted: 11/30/07
The Texas Tech University Library celebrated the generosity of men's basketball coach Bob Knight by hosting A Legacy of Giving: The Bob Knight Exhibit on Thursday night.

Tech students, faculty members and Lubbock residents were in attendance as Knight prepared to speak about the importance of the library on campus, but first, he posed a question.

"If any of you come from farms or ranches where your dad would allow me to hunt, I would appreciate it," he said to a laughing audience. "Just as long as your dad isn't a lying 'sonbitch,' that would be great for me; I would enjoy that immensely."

As Knight spoke to the audience, which was surrounded by highlights of Knight's coaching career portrayed by murals, panels decorated with the individual victories through his career and video clips of Knight's accomplishments at Tech, he said only a handful of students would realize the importance of the library.

"Probably very few of you come to school thinking that perhaps the best asset that I'm going to have while I'm in school is the library, but believe me, it is," he said. "There's more to be learned here in the library than anywhere else on campus."

Director of the Library Jeff Whitley said the donations and generosity of Knight have been a catalyst for promoting and funding the campus library.

"In 2001, when Coach landed in March, he announced a $10,000 gift, and that essentially started the Coach Knight Library Fund," Whitley said. "From then on, Coach Knight traveled in Texas Tech University alumni meetings, collecting donations for the library. He's given his own personal funds but, more importantly, he's been spreading the word."

The Coach Knight Library Fund has collected more than $300,000 for the library since Knight came to Texas and made his initial donation. Whitley said the exhibit is the library's way of giving back to Knight for his donations through the years while acquainting students with the history of Knight's journey to Tech.

"It's educational for students, and a gift back to Coach for what he's given to us," he said. "It's a token of our appreciation."

As Knight continued with his speech, he alluded to his mother being a schoolteacher and the influence his mother and grandmother had on him going to the library as a boy. He said the experience made a lasting impression on his life.

"I can't look back over my lifetime and think of anything that was more important to me, from which I benefited more, than my mom taking me to the library or my grandmother taking me to the library when I was six years old to get a library card," he said. "I learned to read, and I learned to like reading."

Donald Dyal, dean of the libraries, said Knight's dedication to educating and his generosity to the library has distinguished Tech from Texas A&M, the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University in terms of funding because of the celebrity and support Knight brings to Tech.

"The real issue is that he has allowed us to use his name; here's a guy who calls the president 'George,'" he said. "We get gifts and donations from people who aren't Tech alumni; we get $10,000 checks from people we've never heard of because of him. They don't know Texas Tech besides Coach Knight."

As Knight segued past his early stages of reading, he brought the audience up to speed with his love of words, particularly "sonbitch." Knight said he loved the word sonbitch and the simple yet complex nature of the term.

"I love the word sonbitch; that's a West Texas word," he said. "When I came here, in all the years before I came here, every once in a while, I'd get carried away and use the word son of a bitch; which is a Midwestern term. My wife, when I came home one day, I said sonbitch. She said 'Sonbitch, you talking about a female dog?' I said no, it's like a contraction; like did not/ didn't, do not/don't, are not/aren't, son of a bitch/sonbitch. She said, 'Oh, I got you. When did you start using the word son of a bitch?' I said, 'Oh, I was probably two.'"

Knight encouraged the audience to support the men's basketball team, the school and to make use of the library. He said the potential of the facility is immeasurable.

"I've always felt the library is the absolute heart of a university," he said. "Use the library, get to know how to use the library, like to come to the library and you're going to see that there's an awful lot here for you."

A Legacy of Giving: The Bob Knight Exhibit is on display in the library's first-floor Croslin Room and will run until the end of February in time for playoffs.

I'd also like to add that the amount of money given may not be a large sum, but the attention given to the library is also worth noting. Many donors to Texas Tech give to departments, but Knight chose the ONE institution that benefits EVERY student at Texas Tech University. He could have given time/money solely to the athletic department but he CHOSE the library.
Even Knight's most bitter enemies on campus have benefited from his fundraising efforts. If you want to talk about maturity and being a "bigger man" then look no further than Bob Knight's efforts on behalf of the library.

I always loved the Jim Belushi "Chess Coach" satire of him. He obviously had a high level of love for the game for him to take a job at a mediocre school after being fired and to jack up it's basketball program.

Googling Bob Knight images is pretty amusing.

He was very loyal to Tech students.

Oh, the stories I could tell....

He was great coach and he made my degree from Texas Tech more valuable. I may not agree with all of his methods but I have to say thanks because of him more people know about Texas Tech. Go Red Raiders.

Coach Knight was good friends with Don Donoher the coach at Dayton when I was going to school there (we had a DIII football team that nobody cared about so we all rooted for Ohio St). I got to meet him while I was working a summer job in the fieldhouse near the basketball offices and he was visting coach Donoher, said hello and asked about the book I was reading (It was a Soviet Policy book). was a very nice guy to me

he was (and is) an extreamly loyal person. When coach Donoher got uncermonisoly fired from Dayton in 1989, after 25 years, 400+ victories and like 3 losing seasons, coach Knight went apeshite over the UD admin for firing him. He even put him on staff at IU for a couple of seasons.

When Landon Turner, a player for his 81 title team was paralyzed in a car wreck it was coach Knight who paid for all his medical expenses and made sure he was OK.

I may not of liked some of his outbursts but man the guy could win, made academics priority 1 and did a lot for the betterment of the univ as evidenced by his library work at Tech. Reminded me a lot of Woody Hays who of course was the football coach at Ohio St when coach Knight was there

We will miss him on sidelines

I saw the "angry Knight" many times. He did have anger manegment issues, but, about 99.99% of the time the anger was cause by someone being lazy/stupid/foolish/boorish. Some of those NCAA refs are pathetic.

You do know that the infamous 2004 "Salad gate" episode at United Market Street (50th) must have been something to see. Supposedly Knight and the Chancellor (a whiny tool named David Smith) argued at the salad bar, threw salad at each other, argued in the parking lot, and, according to one witness, were arguing at the intersection. One of them got out of his car and pounded on the other car. Gerald Myers supposedly kept Knight from really kicking Smith's butt. Knight is tall and very strong. He would have clobbered Smith.
The place was crowded, but, OF COURSE, since it was Lubbock, only old people witnessed it, so, naturally, they had no idea who/what/where/why/when/how had just happened.
I would have LOVED to have seen it. Laughing
