So I always thought the price of items included tax.

Checked my receipt after going to Emart and see a sum of 6, 950 under neath my total of 69, 500 bringing the grand total to 76 450.

Is it tax?

Yes, it is tax. it's 10% of the total. It is included in the price of things on the shelf. It's not added on.

In this case the tax was added on after the prices on the shelf were totaled.

You're POSITIVE of that? Many, many times my sales slip will show the tax separately, but it's always totaled up to the shelf price.

The shelf prices came up to 69,500. Then they hit me for 10 per cent extra

No they didn't. It's already included in the shelf price, but on the receipt it's broken down into pre-tax subtotal, tax, and grand total.

Some items are taxable, some aren't. The big box marts will itemize them on your receipt.
