I think about 95% necessarily. The Dems have broken the glass ceiling. If the GOP doesn't keep up, they will look like troglodytes. |

| McCain needs to save the VP spot for deal making. He hasn't got the nomination locked up, and may not be able to do so before the convention. He might have to make a deal for McCain/Romney or McCain/Huckabee to win enough delegates at the convention. |

McCain is already a big enough target for the "30-second ads" that define American politics.
The last thing he needs is a VP that'll make a bigger target than him. |

I agree, everyone is talking about the upside to him choosing a VP quickly, but no one mentions the downside to it. Usually when you choose a VP you get a bump in the polls (as do the candidates coming out of the convention). Certainly getting that bump in the summer would be better then now as it could help build momentum for McCain. It will be easier for the Democrats to plow McCain and whomever his VP. It will also give them more time to throw negative ads at both of them.
As someone pointed out, he hasn't won the nomination yet (though I think it's just a matter of time). I pointed out the other day that I thought it was way too early for either party to be thinking of VP nominees. |
