Thunder Burger could be the worst burger I've ever had in Korea. I ordered the largest one for about 7000W. It was about the same size a Big Mac, was 50 lettuce, doughy bread, flavorless meat, absolute muck. Should have just gone to BK for a whopper instead.
Smokey Saloon is all good, they know how to do a good burger right. A 3 Alley's cheeseburger is always a sure thing as well. Aussie shop gets a highly recommended as well. |

Sad but true. BK is a tolerable default burger. I usually end up with buyer's remorse though about an hour afterwards.
Lotteria? daammmnn.
McD's? Meh.
Freshness Burger? Overpriced BK and smaller at that.
Guess I'll be heading into Itaewon for decent burger. |

I''ll vote but I just read an interesting story in Time about the gourmetization of the hamburger in America. The most blatant example is the 65 dollar burger (somewhere in Manhattan) with Kobe beef and truffles. In Vegas you can get a $27 burger with sirloin beef, ribs, fois gras and truffles
Restaurants will now grind good steak with the chuck and put blue cheese and other fancy toppings on. They say 12 dollar chains are catching on. Although 12 for a burger and fries is pretty normal at family restaurant places. I say bring on the gourmet burgers.
As for Seoul Eamo is right---depressing but I'd go to BK. Or anywherebut Nashville. Easier to name most pathetic like Lotteria or that other chain---theres one in COEX and used to be one near the Kyobo. Someone help me here.
Oh one other thing the story asks. Why burgers? Why aint there, say, a meatloaf joint every 2 blocks? Why is that? |

Forceone: Is that the Euro-Frico Burger from Lotteria???
A burger doesn't need a big onion ring engulfing it. A burger is about the beef! |

There it is -- The Sloppy Saloon. "Sloppy" is a fair description of the neighbourhood, the clientele, and the burgers themselves, for despite a menu showing many different silly names, every burger they sell is in fact that quaintest of American meals, the "sloppy joe". It's just arranged to look like a hamburger, momentarily. Picture the consistency of a sopping-wet, crumbly old sponge.
This photo was taken a minute or two too early. Before that meal was half consumed, the bun had disintegrated into mush and there was a garish orange-coloured soup scum covering the bottom of the plate. Multiple visits, groups of 3 or 4 diners each time, and a variety of methods were employed, all with similarly soggy results.
So, is it any good? Oh, I suppose, if you're looking for a hamburger you can eat with a spoon. Or a straw. And if you are, the good news is there are 4 (5?) Smokey Saloon locations around Seoul. The bad news is too few of you little shits seem to know where those other locations are, so you're all clogging this one tiny branch in Itaewon, gd it. However, the crowd was nearly all Koreans every time we went. Korean couples of the "let's play with each other's fingers across the table while we wait 30 minutes for our meal" age/stage of the dating process. Those Koreans.
Our Verdict: 3 thumbs up, 3 thumbs down, and 1 pointing to the left.
Mine was one of the "up" thumbs, because I think it probably is one of the best burgers in Seoul served in a restaurant where anyone can get in (i.e., not the Navy Club). But I don't think Smokey Saloon would survive a month in the West, not even in a little town of 10,000. Not unless it was a Koreatown.
