Does anyone own a cat or a dog? I was thinking about getting one while I'm living in Korea but I am not sure if it is a good idea since I will have to take it back with me on a 15 hour flight back to the USA.
What do the pet owners think?

| Depends on your lifestyle. I brought one with me initially and adopted another dog here, and now they both travel back and forth to the States with me. No problems. If you want other people's ideas there is a wonderful thread on here called something like "Post your pets photos". |

Check the buy/sell/trade forum on here and at the top is a section for pet adoptions. That will give you the links you need to find pets. There's a shelter full of over 100 dogs that is suppose to be shut down this month and the dogs are in danger of being put down. That link will also give you information about some really cute puppies and kittens that are available right now. And if you don't feel like adopting, you could consider providing a foster home for some of them until they do find perm. homes. Talk with Tim. He's a really good person. He helped me with some rescues in a completely different country. PM me if you want to know more. This guy never gives up on an animal no matter how sick or how desperate the situation might seem.
BTW, lots of people take their pets back home with them to the USA and Canada. And if you crate train your dog, they often learn to go in there and stay like it's a den. Put a blanket inside with a few toys and they will often naturally go and lay down especially if you throw in a treat for encouragement. So animals can do just fine on those journeys back home right inside the same place they consider sort of like a 'home.'  |

A pet dog or cat can do you a world of good here in Korea and vice-versa.
Many don't realize how much pets give simple satisfaction and company, and that helps defeat depression, boredom, loneliness and even purposelessness.
I advise any expat living abroad to get a pet dog or cat, if not just to combat culture shock. |

A pet can do exactly what you described. Then there is the other side of the coin. My adopted jindogae jumped from my car last night and took off like a bat out of hell as I opened the car door to put in some take-out. I have searched for her over and over again for nearly 24 hours. The stress and anxiety is overwhelming.
I will keep searching for her and hold the smallest hope that I can find her.
OP you must be committed to a pet here just like anywhere else in the world. I'm rambling, because I am upset. Good luck! |

Thanks for that. I just made my rounds again with no luck. If it was my neighborhood that she jumped out in, then I know she would find her way home. Sadly enough, it was in an area that she is unfamiliar with. She is a timid dog to start with, so who knows where she went. |

That's really too bad.  If you get her back, you should seriously consider obedience training. Dogs need to learn to obey and come when they are called. It's important! |

| We adopted a cat here and she is lovely! We adore her! Taking her back to Canada should be no problem, but I'm not sure about the USA. I would check on the quarantine regulations and airline charges/restrictions BEFORE you adopt. You don't want to have to try and find your pet a new home 1 month before you leave! |

If you are going to spend time and take catre of your animal, then get a pet. If you are go out all weekend and want to ditch your pet on others while on vacation. Think again. Nobody really wants to watch your animal for months on end.
More people should think before they get a pet and then get rid of it after their year contract is up. |

Yah that is my main concern-- whether or not I would have problems bringing him back home when my contract is up.
I def. would want to get a dog or cat but I don't want to put him through so much stress flying back-- especially a cat.
