A black president per se?
Call me terribly old-fashioned, but surely ideas and ability are more important than melanin?
I'm an Obama supporter, but not because of melanin. |
Well, Christopher Hitchens, here in America it would really mean something if a black became President. |

What I like about Obama (or one of the things) is that he deeply and genuinely loves his wife. This oozes out of his book. I trust a man who can be trusted by his wife.
That said, I disagree with him on much policy. But I respect the guy quite a bit. |

| I don't see a problem with supporting Obama both for his policies and his skin color. A black man as President of the US goes a long way to healing the racial divide in this country, or so I hope. If anyone has a better idea as to how that might be done chime away. |

America? Yes, unfortunately it often is.
Of course I love the place, warts and all, but we are left with a set of choices that cannot help but be divisive along gender and racial lines.
It's shaping up to be pretty dramatic. |

I don't think it's superficial at all. It will help spur a 'cultural revolution' in the broken parts of the black community when a well-educated, well-spoken black man, devoted to his family finally takes the top spot. |

When I said "divisive", I meant potentially divisive. I really hope that if Obama is elected that it will have the opposite effect.
I get a little cynical about that prospect because of how nasty political campaigns have become in recent history. OTOH, there could be some national healing that could result in a more cohesive and strong country.
But again, I find it a little difficult not to be cynical about the prospects. I hope I'm wrong, regardless of the outcome of the election. |

| Yoda is MUCH to short to ever become president in the modern world. |

I meant in regards to the healing bit, not the fact that there are gender and racial lines (although yes, those are superficial as well obviously). |

I'm most curious about the small effects it would have around the world, in places like hagwons for example. Suddenly any prospective black teacher isn't 'Africa teacher' anymore, he's the interviewee that most resembles the president of the US. That's what I would find most interesting. |

So, then you must trust G. W. Bush (and his father) as well, eh? |

No. I should have been more clear. It is one of the reasons I think Obama can be trusted as a leader to not be corrupt. Obviously there are other reasons.
Besides, Laura can't trust ol'George. If the only thing standing in between him and his love for booze, blow and broads is Jesus Christ, then she probably isn't sleeping too soundly. |

Still can't muster two sentences that are grammatically correct, can you?
So G. W. Bush doesn't qualify, I see. So what's your excuse for his father? |
