Not too shabby! What make/model is the MoBo? Why didn't you go for 6400 RAM? Can 3g run in dual channel?

Just about okay......

I would expect a better GPU and RAM for 870,000.

Not knowing enough, I insisted on an "Intel motherboard". He wrote down on the invoice "Intel P35 chipset." I now know that means it may be a non-intel mobo with a p35 chip. Dunno. find out tomorrow.

As for RAM, he just wrtoe down pc5300 and I didn't know any better. However, I subsequesntly learned the PC5300 may be better for overclocking. I also gotr the impression that with 3gigs loaded, it wouldn't make much difference.

I assume 3 g can run in a dual channel. If there's a problem I will find out tomorrow. I am planning on bringing my existing hard drive to the shop with me and having him load it then and ther to make sure it runs. Good idea?

The CPU was 290,000. The next model up is ridiculously more expensive with only marginal performance increase.

I am reconsidering the RAM...I may decide to have him put in 6400 but I am not convicned yet that it matters. The PC5300 was $25 per gig.

Your CPU is fine. The Q6600 is a great chip. Although it should cost 254,000, but if you are getting a salesman to build your comp then expect a price hike.

I'm talking about your GPU. Graphics card. The 8500GT is pretty low level. They can be bought for as little as 80,000. Kind of disproportionate in a comp costing 870,000.

But, as you say, it's for recording audio, not gaming.................wait....did you mention audio card and speakers? For audio recording shouldn't you be focused on those two things?

Price does seem a tad excessive...could have gotten this rig priced out on danawa for 200,000 more.

ASUS P5KC
PATRIOT DDR2 4GB PC2-6400 LLK (2Gx2)
HIS HD 3870 IceQⅢ TurboX DDR3 512MB
LG DVD-Multi GH-20LS10
Samsung easyspin SATA2 500G (7200/16M)
case
ZM600-HP
i-rocks RF-6570 X-Slim wireless keyboard and mouse set

Buy an extra gig of RAM - it is certainly cheap enough and will allow you to run in dual channel, even if windows can only address 3.5 gig of it. Even if you don't use it now, you will enjoy it later when you upgrade your windows.

I run an E6750 and a Q6600 in 2 of my home computers and I use the Gigabyte P35-DS3r motherboard in both of them. I am VERY happy with it. The new p35-ds3r mobos have sockets for 2 IDE drives and 8 SATA drives. (I have 2.5 terabytes of drive space in each of them. )

I am curious as to why you think you need to attempt to overclock a Q6600? (BTW, they are only 246k won at Son-in plaza (Yongsan) as of last weekend).

Is that including shipping? Also, would i have to put it together (futck that).

I also have a one year warranty on the rig through the store. Also my HD is 32 Mg cache (important for audio recording).

I dunno. I think I did okay. I coulda shaved a couple bucks but there would have been less support from a mail-order special... Wink

My only real question now is the RAM. Can someone convicne me that 6400 is gonna make that much difference?

The only way you will lose your dual channel functionality is if there are 3 1GB sticks inside. If they went with 2 1GB and 2 512MB, you will be ok.

Check inside before you buy more RAM.

As for losing your RAM past 3GB, its a bit of 32 bit smoke and mirrors. 3GB is fine, so long as you don't use 3 single sticks. If that is the case, then yes, get 1GB more.

Anyhow, nice system. Congrats.

Next time, PM spliff for the lowest price on quality parts! Wink

Edit: "won't"? Make that "will"...

Wait, what happens if I use 3 igb sticks? That's what I have.

As for the "parts". that's just it. Parts. I bought it in a store and they will stand behind the system for a year. Big difference in my mind at least.

Simply put...

You need dual channel with Intel for the RAM to keep pace with the CPU. If it can't, you get a traffic jam and data flow is slowed down, though many may argue that it is not significant (but nobody can deny it occurs to a degree).

Single channel causes this slowdown to happen. This is why Intel mainboards have color coded RAM slots...telling you to fill them all or leave 2 of the same color empty.

Spend 20,000 and get another 1GB stick.

Yes, you have a guarantee, which is comforting. I wasn't insinuating anything in my post...kind of an inside joke to spliff.

Enjoy your new system and post some of your music for us!

They didn't tell me that but the salesman seemed a little green. Probably an honest mistake. Do you think I should go with PC 6400?

BTW I will post music as soon as I finish this project.

Just ask for another 1GB stick of whatever you bought. It is best to keep them all the same.
