I've recently been offered a position by Seoul Educational Development. They seem to be a headhunter-type of service for Universities in Korea, and they want to place me at SangMyung University here in Seoul.

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the company or this university? They're paying 20,000 W per hour, but since I'm only doing one term (4 months) I don't really get anything--no housing, no health care, no vacation. Nothing. On the plus side it seems like the work will be relatively easy and the students will be older than a typical hagwon.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks.

I'd think twice about working for SED. From what you said they are offering you, it sounds like you are a Korean teacher. Between September 2002 and Januray 2003, they paid the foreign teachers late and many of the Korean teachers didn't get paid for months on end.

Also, call the pension office and see what sort of record SED has when it comes to submitting pensions. You'll find it isn't so great. They owe the pension office (on my behalf) over one million won.

I worked for SED until they fired me for insubordination--I had the audacity to complain about late payment of wages. SED isn't a recruitor but a langauge school. Most of the teachers I knew who worked for SED hated them. Late payment of wages, terrible textbooks, the list goes on.

My advice: Don't.

I'm just about to sign a contract with SED!! Oddly they do have an 11-month contract.. they told me if I sign another contract I'd get severance pay.. I was thinking of that.. and then bailing sometime shortly thereafter.. (talking about after working the contracted 11-months)..

Anyhow, this is interesting what people say about SED!!!!

They also give vacation times.. is it legitimate??

I better research more before I actually do sign and come on over.. sheesh!

Where do I find out more about them?

Don't sign with SED--that's my recommendation. If you want to know about SED pay attention to this board. For the past 4-5 months, SED has been slammed by a number of current employees and ex-teachers. We aren't just sore losers, but people who have experienced working for this pathetic excuse for an organization. SED is the kind of outfit that gives Korea a bad name in the TEFL industry.

Do what you want, but don't say we didn't tell you so.

SED was at my university and the guy who worked for them finally gave up and left - they owed him W3.5million and looked like they weren't going to pay an upcoming payday.

someone above said about their potential contract, "I don't really get anything--no housing, no health care, no vacation. Nothing."

It may be even worse than that - you may not even get paid.

Here we go again with SED.

One part of the corporation changed their name to SEV. That's the one with their main office in Pundang.

I just finished my year contract with them today.

Actually with SED, it depends on which corporation you are talking to.

But yeah, all in all, they will pay you late. The SEV branch gave me everything in the contract. Yea, their books were crappy but the working conditions, schedule, and students were fine.

The director was honest and good to work for. The only troubles were their money problems.

I was actually happy their for awhile. I taught college students this semester.

I'll be lucky to see the money they owe me but they have paid the two other teachers that finished their contracts in full. I can only hope and pray.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
