Yep...there are some people (one for sure and you know who you are) who are getting in touch with posters here and offering help for what turns out to be high costs.

Not only that, but if they feel the poster is a noob, they will introduce a virus to a perfectly good computer so as to milk more money.

Since when does a dirty fan require a new case with a window so you can see inside? Since when does a dirty fan require 500,000 won? Since when does compressed air pose a problem to mainboards? What does a "whole new cooling system" mean?

Beware people...there is 1 poster here who sends PMs to people and is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I am asking folks here to be careful who they allow into their systems.

I know this is a strange post, but I am upset. A poster here got hosed by another poster, a friend of mine...he charged 200,000 won for nothing and then put a virus on a healthy computer to mess it up and get more money.

If you have computer troubles and bring it onto Dave's, listen to solid, long-term posters or people who have a good posting history. The person I am referring to in this thread has none of that.

sounds like this poster is a real tool asking for trouble. There must be some sort of legal recourse for someone who has had a virus deliberately introduced to their system as well as paying for help that doesn't provide any actual help.

Looks like a real "geek" mafia tactic. What does the guy do if you don't pay up? Smash your kneecap with a power supply unit...Very Happy

I would advise that if anyone offers you help here on Dave's by PM, ask for a 'no fix-no fee' arrangement.

The person contacting you may not be a qualified computer engineer and should therefore not expect to be paid if they can't fix something.

I haven't posted in a while because I am really busy these days. However, this post caught my eye. Demo (a good guy) wouldn't post something like this up if it wasn't legitimate.

Demo, who is the poster of whom you speak?

Yeah, if you are sure that all you said is true, give us his "screen name."

time to name names.....

he can stand up and defend his actions or slink away quietly into the night - never to darken the doorstep again.

Even I took a shot on the chin when I got kicked off a torrent site and fouled another users good name.... (for which I publicly apologized and took my lumps for.)

Name the name.

Hell, for 500k won you could buy a whole new midrange computer system!

200k won will buy you an entry level tower - brand new and built while you wait at Yongsan.

Oh, and if anyone needs help, I charge coffee and cola and snacks for my time.

.

Demophobe don't you do computer work for money? This seems to me like it might be a good way to oust your competition. Wink

I do my work for free. I haven't made a dime from helping others, though most end up buying me a hard drive, some RAM or at least lunch and a barrel of coffee, but I don't ask anything. I am not trying to gloat in saying that either; it's just the truth. I came here in '96 and where I was, a small town, I would have loved some English speaking assistance. Though times have changed a lot and people are generally more knowledgeable about computers, the net is mature, more Koreans speak English in Seoul, much terminology is the same in English and Korean, I still want to help if other avenues fail.

As for outing the poster, I am not sure I should do that. Legal stuff, I fear. It is best to give the poster no leverage in that area, because as it stands, the victim could launch legal action to get his money back, not to mention if I bill for my time to mop up his mess (from now on..hehe) and the victims lost productivity because of fudged computers. I am certain about all I wrote or I simply wouldn't have wrote it.

Anyhow, the message is clear and it actually goes beyond who the individual is in this case. Put your trust in careful places.

I feel like a drama queen, posting this matter here, but I think that predatory behavior is reprehensible and needs to be exposed. Sometimes, desperation can make one reach out in haste; lack of English computer assistance makes a strangers' offer tempting, and apparently, that can be regrettable.

I was going to post this earlier, but this kind of leads into it.

There are probably half a dozen posters here who are willing to work for coffee of lunch (the problem would be finding us when we're free).

Embarassed

I really didn't mean to sound self-aggrandizing, especially to you beaver, someone to whom I have an unpaid debt of gratitude.

It didn't sound self-aggrandizing. It's what I wanted to say as a statement of the way it is.

And debt of gratitude? Dude, that weren't nothing but a coffee offense.
