I think it's all of five bucks to get PC6400 instead of 5300...thanks for the suggestion about the slots. I had no idea.

| With RAM being so cheap at the moment the best buy is 2x2GB sticks. You have the potential of 4GB with the speed of dual channel. |

Can my system handle 8 gigs? I thought someone else said Windows will only recognize 3.5 gigs.

If you do go with a different speed, change all of them, not just one.

Eamo is right...buying 2 sticks of 2GB will leave 2 of your 4 RAM slots open, in case you want to put more RAM in later.
So, you can choose:
2 x 2GB, or 4 x 1GB, but be sure all the sticks are the same speed and brand. |

That has to do with 32-bit Windows and I think pre PCI-e mobos. |

32 bit hardware limitation.
You will need to go to a 64 bit OS if you want to utilize more than 4GB of RAM. However, if you are serious about using your system as a recording studio, 64 bit computing (OS and apps) is the way to go.
In this sense then, leaving 2 slots open may be a wise choice. |

| Its 32 bit...trust me. Despite hardware trends, its a 32 bit software world. |

Times they are a changin'...........For performance users..................if you just surf the net and download TV shows then ignore what I'm saying.
....................32bit Windows (XP or Vista) has a limitation of 3.5GB. To get the best out of a computer using the software which will be released in the future, you will want to have 4GB (or 8GB) of memory which is only possible by installing 64bit Windows.
For most users, 32bit can work fine. But if you want to buy a computer then you need to think about the RAM it will need with future applications. That means installing 64bit Windows, knowing that your system can recognize up to 120GB of RAM!! |
