I'm watching a news show on Arirang, two academics are discussing the challenges the Korean economy is facing and why things are sluggish. Part of the problem is North Korea, now they have nuclear weapons and are not declaring, dismantling, disabling and abandoning them. The six party talks are at a stalemate.
So what does this mean? A teacher at my school, and I have heard at other schools, simply take the 2 milion won offer and ask for 10% more, they made at least 2.2 M. You see, you need to say that North Korea is dangerous because of nuclear weapons and missile tests and my family is worried about me. This works best with women, but men can use it as well. This is now true. We are not in the Korea of five years ago.
Teachers are being lowballed here and many people from around the world don't want to come here, period. The market now has a Korean nuclear permium and teachers need to take advantage of it.
Koreans of course because the problem of North Korea is a Korean problem, things are just fine becaue Korea is the greatest country with the best people in the world. They can think what they want, but they need to pay for this mentality.
I have had students say to me, "If Pakistan can have nuclear weapons, why can't Korea?" And, "What kind of system will we adopt when the countries unite?" Make'em pay. |

Pretty much, why would you ever work for less than you could, benefis being equal? Ask for as much as you think you are worth. The nukes are a non-issue, IMHO. Should the norks use their puny nukes they won't be a country any more. I don't know of anyone afraid of them. What nuclar armed county has ever been invaded?
Whatever the market will bear. Crappy teachers deserve crappy pay. |

Nukes a non-issue? Sure, no problem, nothing to worry about at all. A secretive, abusive regime that is a terrorist state and lets hundreds of thousands starve is nothing to worry about.
South Korea paid a ransom to terrorists last August. Hmm. Seems like a country that is soft on terrorism. Aid was shoveled to a regime for a decade many think that used the money to build nukes. Smart?
Teachers should use a little more negotiating skilll and see what happens. Isn't this a business? I mean, if SK is soft on terrorism, then surely they can be soft on teachers when it comes to salaries. See what bounces. |

Although I agree with everything you wrote, it makes too much sense.
Logic will not work on Koreans, they have a natrual immunity to it.
What does work is bold faced lies laced with fabricated sentiments rooted on anything dealing with family. Also be sure to add some completely random and unrelated information in order to insure compliance.
Something like, "My Grandmother, who has a very weak heart and is old, now requires extra medication that is quite costly, to help her with the stress of worrying about me living in Korea and being so close to a crazy dicatator with "short man" complex, who psychologically supplements his manhood by building large phallic shaped 'newkuelar" bombs. I must pay for her medicine, since it my responsibility, and do not want her to suffer any more than she already has".
Don't forget to add the icing on the cake, "Please undestand me?"
Yeah, that would probably work just fine. |
