forgot to mention one i have seen recently which i really enjoyed, The Road to Guantanamo. A really well done docu-drama about the boys from the UK caught in Afghanistan and sent to Guantanamo Bay.

I liked "Once". Brilliant soundtrack.

Man, hated it.

I watched the first 30 minutes. Stopped. Couldn't get past the guy's whiney voice.

Went back the next day and watched it again and tried to blank out his whiney voice and it actually got a lot better. The story as such was pretty good.

Maybe, but he wouldn't stop doing his insipid Coldplay impression.

Glen Hansard can be a bit over-the-top and melodramatic, but in my opinion, he is a talented singer/songwriter. I enjoyed the movie, a bit slow at first like Dome Vans said, but it did get much better!

Oh, and as a side note, if you ever have the opportunity to see Glen's band, The Frames, in concert, I highly recommend it! I saw them a few years back in London, near Shepherd's Bush, and it was one of the best live shows that I have seen! Very Happy

The plot summary sounds like the life of my mum, especially the line about 'the three worthless sons' Laughing

Trees Lounge with Steve Buscemi is an absolute gem.

Meantime with Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Phil Daniels is another cracker about 1980s East London, a brilliant film. Here is a clip.

A couple of my favorite films:

"Captives" - Another great Tim Roth film, a bit dark and intense.

"Starter for 10" - James McAvoy as a first year uni student in 80's Bristol, great soundtrack with The Cure.

Another huge Meantime fan here. Like most Mike Leigh films, so real it hurts.

Mike Leigh is one of the great writer/directors. I like the comment one poster made, his films are so real, they hurt. My favorite is "Secrets and Lies" but i have enjoyed everything he has made. Everytime I see "Naked," I want to take a shower; "are you with me"

Another great film is "The Castle" from Australia. IMO, it is one of the funniest and sweetest films ever made; "he's dreaming"

Herzog's films are, well unique. "The Enigma of Kasper Hauser" is one strange piece of film making. I recently watched it with Herzog's commentary, and he even admits that some scenes make no sense, but he liked they way they looked and felt.

I have a soft spot for "Valley Girl" as it has a like totally awesome soundtrack, not to mention that scene with Sparx's "Monster of Love."

One more movie I can't get enough of is "Backbeat" which details the history of the Beatles before they become, THE BEATLES

Last one; "Hard Core Logo"

Hard Core Logo is definitely the best film in Bruce Macdonald's rock'n' roll trilogy, altho I do have a soft spot for Highway 61. I am also a huge fan of Backbeat, which has a fantastic soundtrack.

Australian comedy is among the best in the world, and I certainly group The Castle in there. Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla and the uber dark Bliss also rank.

The War of the Buttons is a nice little movie for those nostalgic afternoons when you want to be transported back to childhood.

I haven't followed the thread or looked through all of it, but I thought I would throw Dancer in the Dark out there. Even though it's pretty painful to watch, it's so unique and heartbreaking it's hard to turn away.

Someone may have mentioned Breaking the Waves along the way.

Don't know how obscure it is, but good call. Dancer in the Dark is one of my favorites, an extraordinary piece of work. It's like the camera is leering at her pain, it feels almost pornographic sometimes, like I'm watching something I shouldn't be seeing, something profoundly private. It destroys me every time.

"Midnight in the garden of good and evil" ... has the wonderful John Cusac and a character called "The Lady Chablise" who is one of the most colorful characters in any movie I've ever seen.
