Quote:
On 11 February 2008, Jose Ramos-Horta was shot twice in the stomach and one of his personal guards killed after rebels launched a coordinated pre-dawn gun attack on his home and the home of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao in Dili.[25] Presidential guards returned fire, killing rebel leader Alfredo Reinado. Ramos-Horta was taken to the Australian military hospital in Dili[3][4], where he underwent surgery.[26] He was later flown to Darwin, Australia for further treatment[27] and placed in a medically induced coma on full life support.[28] A neighbor told the Reuters news agency that the stomach wound appeared to be serious[29], but the Portuguese daily newspaper Pblico stated that the wound is not serious and that the Portuguese Embassy in Dili has declared that Ramos-Horta is out of danger

Jose Ramos-Horta 'not out of the woods'
By staff writers and wires
February 12, 2008 01:04pm

EAST Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta is "not out of the woods yet"
following the attempt to assassinate him and will remain in an induced
coma until at least Thursday, doctors say.

The Nobel Peace prize winner is in a serious but stable condition following
yesterday's assassination attempt in Dili, during which he was shot two or
three times.

Extra Australian troops will fly into the anarchy sweeping East Timor
today on a mission to round-up rebels being blamed for the assassination
plot.

The fresh blitz comes after Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao declared a
state of emergency in the immediate wake of yesterday's attempts on his
and Dr Ramos Horta's lives.

Operation

Surgeons operated on Dr Ramos-Horta for up to three hours overnight to
remove bullet fragments and repair his wounds. He still faces further
surgery.

"His condition remains extremely serious but by the same token, stable,"
Royal Darwin Hospital general manager Len Notaras said on ABC radio.

"The next few days will be the telling point."

Dr Notaras said bullett fragments removed from the president's body had
been given to Australian Federal Police for forensic examination.

He said Dr Ramos-Horta was lucky to be alive after the assassination
attempt and had suffered "terrible injuries".

"He remains in the intensive care (ward) and will remain there until at
least Thursday this week on a ventilator.

"I believe he is extremely lucky to be alive.

"His progress is going to plan, clinically, and we expect that the next
three to five days will be critical in terms of ensuring that we keep a
vigilance for infection."

East Timor President Criticises Response After Assassination Bid

SYDNEY (AFP) - East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta has criticised the response of international forces as he lay bleeding in the road for 30 minutes after being shot outside his home last month.

In his first full interviews since he was critically wounded in the assassination attempt, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate described the chaotic events from the moment he locked eyes with the rebel gunman.

"I could see from the face and eyes of one of (rebel leader Alfredo) Reinado's men that he was going to shoot me," Ramos-Horta told The Sydney Morning Herald in an interview published Friday.

"I turned around. It was at that moment that he fired at least two shots, hitting me on the right side of the back.

"If I had not turned at that moment, he would have shot me right in the chest. I would have died immediately."

Ramos-Horta said he was told that United Nations police had obstructed people trying to rescue him as he lay bleeding near the front gate of his house in the capital Dili on February 11.

"I was shouting for an ambulance," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "My security people in the meantime had arrived, and it took so long for an ambulance to arrive.

"It was a battered ambulance without a paramedic, only the driver. Fortunately a Portuguese paramedic jumped into our ambulance."

The president, who is recuperating in hospital in the northern Australian city of Darwin, accused international peacekeeping forces in the country of not acting quickly enough to stop the rebels' escape.

"I would say that the Australian-led forces could have promptly surrounded the entire town closing all the exits, using helicopters, sending immediately elements to my house to get the information on the ground," he said.

"They would have captured them within hours."

Reinado was killed during the attack and eight rebels have surrendered, while East Timor's military and police, with help from the Australian-led international stabilisation force, are pursuing others.

International forces were sent to East Timor after friction erupted in 2006 between army and police factions after a military desertion led to an increase in street violence that left 37 people dead.

You are right on that one, Ya-ta-Boy. IGTG, what was the point of saying the same thing thrice in different threads? I am not sure if that would constitute spamming, but it might. Don't try to force people to read this or that. They can read what they want on their own, I am sure.

Thanks...You've been somewhat of a good sport, IGTG, just tone it down with the spamming. Give other people a chance to read, debate, exchange. Otherwise, it would be like those people who run after us in Seoul and yelling Jesus and insisting we take their pamphlets, which whether you are a Christian or not, you may object to. Consider other posters, basically, and their input.

Thank you very much,

Il Suo Maestro Signor Enrico Palazzo

While 'thrice' is a good word and usage of it doesn't come up all that often, I'd like to see a public spanking of IGTG when he spams the board.

My only--and I do mean only-- sympathy for him is when some other posters start calling him 'her' in an effort to diminish him. I have a problem with the sexism that implies. No one, as far as I know, has complained about that, but I find it arrogant, sleazy and distasteful. But that is just me. Some insecure males need that kind of dismissive gesture to reassure themselves of their superiority.

1) SPAM is a gross overstatement & misrepresentation.

2) This is a current "hot" issue.

3 ) The related thread was purposely "bumped" as it was recognized that the OP had gone through the effort ( two weeks ago ) of starting it.

Thought i could thus at least support their original intent in helping to perhaps reinvigorate futher community discussion.

4) There's no guarantee simply b/c it's posted ONCE on ONE thread, users will see it.

5) The only ones who seem to have noticed ( and apparently become mentally "disturbed" by the fact ) i posted it more than once

are the board's one or two stalkers & trollsters who seem to mostly enjoy launching cheap-shot personal attacks.

e.g. STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE.

Instead of taking a purely "disinfo" tact, if you're going to comment, why not at least try & address the issues Ya-ta?

Since there is a thread explicitly dedicated to this topic, why not allow everyone to decide for him/herself whether or not to respond, rather than to cram it down everyone's throat?

If you had any respect for other people, you would accept that we also have a computer and can read all the same stuff you can.

The question of the day: Why don't you respect other people, IGTG?

So what if IGTG posts something two or three times once in a while?

I've only seen the post above once, so it was interesting. If I see it again, I'm perfectly capable of scrolling by.

It is more annoying to read posts of people complaining about the duplicates.

If people have so much time in their lives that they can find all the dupes, report them and complain about them, then maybe they need another hobby.

IGTG's posts are sometimes informative, sometimes entertaining, sometimes important, sometimes nonsense. Sometimes I read them, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I groan, and sometimes I skim them and skip them, but why whine about them?

Grow up people. Get a life. If you ...

(and this is a generic "you" aimed at no one in particular, so that no one feels they are being attacked. But, you're so vain, you probably think this post is about you.)

... if you have nothing to do, why do you waist your time attacking IGTG? Really. And if you think that IGTG has some kind of reality problem, then attacking IGTG would seem to be counterproductive.

Instead, you should turn off your computer and hide from the discordant views that have so agitated your sensitive soul, wind up some propaganda news reels of FDR, kick back with some old dialectic diatribe, immerse yourself in the comfortable retrogressive lies that provide the soma that soothes your soul, pretend that you are living in the modern political world that eludes your ken, and howl at the moon until, hopefully, the light of a new day pierces you with a ray of reality.

... or just scroll past the stuff you don't want to see.

Just some observations. IGTG has been making a hard effort in various areas as a poster to be a team player. That's definitely good. He has somewhat of a good attitude, he is worried about having his personality muzzled and also mentioned bullying. I think people need to tone getting personal with IGTG. Some posters do enjoy some of his posts and his presence. You must understand, he does have a history of holding hard and fast to his causes, some of which seem noble to many. He has posted a lot of them in the other forums, because he sees them as important, which was causing problems, but he is done less of that and has been bringing his posts more into the relevant forum, so he is making an effort and trying to work with other posters. He should carry on posting, just to consider not to be seen as posting in a way that floods which could be interpreted as spam.

Let's use precedent on this one:

If poster A posts about a flying toilet seat and then all of a sudden

Poster B posts about the same topic.

What is the reaction? Many posters will say "Read, it's already been posted".

So with this logic, if you've already posted that article, give the other readers the opportunity to read it. This does not mean you shouldn't post conspiracy theories or whatever stories you like.

Thank you IGTG for being an understanding player, your contributions are appreciated by many.... If you have any questions about this, let us know..... Just consider for yourself how posting the same exact news article everywhere would impact other posters, because I know you try to be very selfless or like to think of yourself as such, so what Ya-ta-boy brought up, though he can be sarcastic is valid even if you may not like his views.

Thank you very much, IGTG. Think of how you can augment your positive impact on this forum. There is no guideline on this, there is nothing really against what you did. If you want to carry on, do so on this thing. Members have brought up the idea of spamming, but members need to clarify what they mean by that. I think that needs to be discussed. You seem like to be a decent fellow, over all, IGTG.

Sincerely yours,

Enrico...

Nice try. True to form, you're "begging" the question.

Either way, some people are worthy of more respect than others Wink

Thank-you for that OTW ...

You raise a number of very obvious points. Clearly at least one of the contributors here ... "sees the light".

Sometimes is the operative word Wink

Indeed, yes. i respect your honest, balanced & objective comments.

Oh yes, and as i'm fully capable of admitting, IGTG is even "sometimes" off-base, if not just plain wrong.

*shrugs* ... sometimes.
