hey all,

i taught almost 3 years in Tokyo and im planning to head on over to Seoul to teach there for a change. For some of the job postings for public schools i see they ask for a criminal check and a health certificate. what exactly is the health certificate about? i tried doing a search on these forums for that but no luck.Sad is there a special form i ask for at my doctors office? Also, do i need a criminal check only from my country (Canada) or also from my time in japan? would it vary by school or is there a standard required by law? Finally, is it too late to apply for the march intake for Public school teachers?

thanks in advance for any clarification and its much appreciated.

Regarding the health check. This actually involves two steps.
Step one: A self-check form. This you fill in yourself, takes about two minutes, and is very basic.
Step two: AFTER your visa is issued and prior to obtaining your Korean ID (ARC) you go to a korean doctor and get a health check done. They (your school) should supply the form. This happens within 90days of your arrival.

Criminal record check: I "Think" its just from your home country. I lived in the UK for a year a couple of years back (obviously different to your situation) and nothing about that was mentioned. This is a requirement set by the immigration department, so it would be standard.

Public schools are still hiring, the biggest "if" is whether you have your criminal record check (its only valid for 3 months I believe). If you have all your docs you should be able to make the March start.

Hopefully these are helpful:

Self Medical Check - form can be found at this link by a poster called Ut Videam http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=110901&highlight=medical+exam

Hospital Medical Exam info - http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=110892&highlight=medical+exam

Re Public School positions - jobs can be found and applied for all year round.

Good luck!

Yes, it's only valid for 3 months and not 6. EPIK applicants seem to be given more leeway with the new rules so maybe their background checks might still be good for an additional 3 months.
