I think the use of the words "allegedly" or "accused of" should be included at this point, but from what the G.I. himself said ("I only kissed her") it doesn't look too good for him.
The Okinawans will definitely be up in arms over this one. I assume Japan must have its own hardcore netizen army. |

The article neither mentions the race of the alleged rapist nor does it post his picture - but the name "Tyrone" is a dead give-away ...
"Diplomatic imunity" is bad enough - I don't think it should be extended to soldiers based in foreign countries. If they are accused of breaking the host country's laws, they should be prosecuted by their legal system (unless they were just following orders from superiors - which is highly unlikely in this instance.)
It shouldn't have much impact in Korea, other than reinforcing stereotypes about foreigners in general - and blacks in particular ... |

This is news from Japan. Please put the country in the thread title as not to mislead.
We all know that this type of behavior has been going on in Japan as long as any foreigner has been residing and doing business there. Don't let there bad press negatively affect the situation on the other side of the East Sea. |

When the crime was committed off duty they are prosecuted by the country's legal systems. SOFA covers incarceration until that time. |

It seems US soldiers do this kind of stuff a lot more in Japan than in Korea. I wonder what the reaction is of your average Japanese person ? Do they go after and blame all foreigners like they do in Korea? |

What are you on about? US Armed Forces members stationed in Japan do not have diplomatic immunity unless they are attached to the United States Embassy in a position accorded diplomatic status. Otherwise, they are under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the United States and Japan. There are currently a few US servicemembers serving time in Japanese prison.

Okinawans are sick and tired of the U.S.
Unfortunately, the Japanese gov't couldn't really give a rats ass about the Okinawans. |

The Americans should have kept Okinawa after WWII. Just a little object lesson to the Japs. |

You know what would be nice in one of these threads? It would be wonderful if nobody used racial slurs. |

Oh no, here we go again with what constitutes a racial slur. Why are people so sensitive about this? |

Really? The whole country and not just our soldiers who live there, huh?
That's a little surprising to me. I think Okinawans shouldn't generalize so much. |

They should be more tolerant. Maybe some of the Canadian English teachers in Japan could make a trek down to the islands and teach them about multiculturalism. |
