I remember my very first mistake with a computer. I was 8 years old and my brother brought home a Packard Bell computer with a 40MB hard drive. I tried to install Wing Commander on it said I needed more disk space. So, I:

cd dos
del *.*

I used to work for a tax software company back in the hoary old days of the 286. Yeah, accountants would go "geez what's this massive command.com file? Ah I'll delete it to free up more space..."

And then we'd get a tech support call. "Say, your program won't run..."

When I was seven or so, I was trying to install Wolfenstein from a floppy to my MS-Dos. Ended up installing it to my monitor's BIOS (don't ask me how). I remember we had our local computer guy come in, and he scratched his head for hours trying to figure out how I did it.

I posted on Dave's because Korean techs had not been doing what I needed. A poster here sent me an unsolicted PM with a phone number of who could help. I called the guy and IMO it all worked out. I thought I got good work.

Right. It can and has worked out for many people. Heck, I was one of those 'strangers' many times and I am glad people have trusted me: I made many new friends through doing so.

I don't want to create a feeling of mistrust here. The person I posted about isn't a regular poster here and when he does stick his head up, he is typically wrong. A quick look back into their short posting history would have revealed this.

I wonder if this is the same person I posted about a while back. Surely you can't out the person directly, but it would be pretty easy drop a dime on him without ever giving any personal information, since...if he is the suspected con-man we're talking about all the information he's given about himself is as spurious as his "services".

People deserve to know they're in danger of getting screwed by someone with a bad rep. I don't have money to toss out the window on guys that charge top dollar for "I don't know" or "I can't fix it". Lame...shame.

WOW. So strange this thread suddenly surfaced up to the top ( I only check the first few threads at the top--yes, I'm that lazy).

Anyhoo, I recent posted in a thread about connecting your laptop & tv using the S video cable. I'm still having some problems, but nothing too major. A poster on here sent me a PM saying " It might have something to do with errr (something I forgot!) and left me his number saying he does tech stuff.

I just find it strange since my problem is so....minor. No way would I get tech help from a pro for this. If I can't mess with it, then it's 5,000 won down the drain..no biggie lol.

Wow -- exactly what I ended up doing too. It's amazing how some people are able to finish up a CS degree without knowing how to format/install a new OS. Of course, that's because programming and knowing how to use/fix computers are two completely different things. But the two often do go together... just not always.

ROFL. Only computer geeks would understand that. I remember experimenting with DOS back in elementary school...

ANYWAY, I can volunteer my services as well, for lunch/dinner... but once school and work kicks in next month, I'll be pretty darn busy (probably only available on some weekends). I know I'm new around here so I might suspiciously fit the bill of the OP's post, but I'm looking to keep my computer fixing skills alive and as well as meet people... plus I just know it's a freaking pain in the butt to have a computer problem, so I can sympathize.

Thanks for the kind words. Maybe its only those close to me that know what an idiot I can be! Laughing

Anyhow...

Turns out that this same character did a number on PaperTiger as well.

Dang I want to put his name up! I mean, how can anyone know if a kind offer is really genuine?

I guess the best thing for people to do is to PM someone they know they can trust here before accepting such an offer.

Superhero, the_beaver, Spliff, eamo, cubanlord, ttompatz, The Lemon (MIA), Giant (MIA), pkang0202, hanguker, chevrolet,... and a host of others who I can't recall off the top...all good guys who can give great advice.

^ I am sure that putting up his username is ok. Not exactly his real name. At least then it will give people a chance to know who he is.

I'd say there couldn't possibly be any ramifications b/c the server is hosted in the US. I can't see how there could be any problems with Korean libel laws.

Come on now. Give us his screen name. Or do I have to post a bogus "Need assistance ASAP: my PC is dying! Heeelp!" to see who will contact me and offer help?

Since we're only talking about a screen name -and we don't even know his real name- how could he charge anyone with libel? "Judge, my Internet ID was defamed on a discussion board! I demand monetary compensation!" Razz Hey, it's not like we are talking about a bad hagwon.

That's actually impossible to do by accident. Especially since a monitor (esp. back then) has no programmable BIOS to speak of... and you certainly couldn't do anything to it through the video cable.

I won't post his name...not even his handle here. I just don't want even the faintest nagging feeling that I have exposed myself to potential problems.

Now, a "how to" for people who come to tech with a problem:

~ Make the problem public. Bring your problem to the forum so that at least the replies can give you some idea of the general direction of the diagnosis. That way, an unsolicited PM stating that you need a new discombobulationizer will signal an alarm.

~ Make any offered solutions public. If someone PMs you with an offer for help, post about what they believe the problem to be. Again, you can see if people here agree or think you are being hosed.

~ Learn the basics. Find out what kind of CPU you have, mainboard, RAM (how much and what kind), graphics, sound. Knowing this will enable you to Google any parts that were changed and see if they are old (thus, used), cheap or otherwise bad. It seems the predator swaps out victims' parts for used or barely functional ones. If you can't get the right software or don't know where to look, post or PM. You will get help.

~ Use the list of trustworthy people. The list I made above (which is far from exhaustive) are people that I recommend listening to. Everyone here has a specialty and most of those posters check in fairly regularly. Turn to them and if they don't know (for example, PMing me about webpage building), they will refer you to someone who does.

The predator has been active here for a long time; I wonder how much money he has made from this forum. Yesterday bought a TV off of him years ago; a TV that didn't work well from day one.

Use this forum, folks. I can say honestly that the group that is here now make this forum very, very strong. It rivals many dedicated computer forums I have seen.

Enough. Sorry to those who are sick of this thread (cbclark4 Wink ), but IMHO, it needed to be said. I would make this a sticky if it were my board.

I just read the post and thought BS he is trying to sound cool. Then I thought maybe he was taking the piss out of us geeks.
