man, that was a scary and gruesome scene today!

thankfully, he will be alright!

mandatory neck guards coming soon??

Yeah, it looked pretty bad... could have been worse though.

It's strange, the last time a major throat injury similar to that happened was also in Buffalo. It happened to Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk and was a lot worse than what happened to Zednik.

If you watch the video you'll see Malarchuk is very very lucky to have survived.

Pretty scary, but if they don't have mandatory visors yet, there's no way necks guards will be mandatory.

His teammate fell forward and his leg swung up and cut Zednik.

I'd like to propose that they play in running shoes, this will avoid all the debate about neck guards. Playing in running shoes is a far more subtle way of protecting the players... neck guards would probably be too uncomfortable.

well another way to look at it is that players are likely MUCH MORE LIKELY to die on the way to the rink than being cut in the neck with a skate and dieing...so I doubt that mandatory neck guards will ever happen

Malarchuk getting his throat cut was a horror show!
like 5 litres of blood pouring out of his neck, and the guys are just standing around in shock for the first few seconds! JEEESSSSUUUSSSSS!

Is it me, or was Bill McCreary (sp?) a linesman in that video with Malarchuk getting cut.. and he's a referee in the game where Zednik gets cut..? talk about dejavu..
