hey guys,

i was wondering if anyone has any advice about taking a day trip. i'd like to leave this big city and see something traditional, some kind of small village. i know when i taught in japan this wasn't very hard. there was always something nearby.

however, i've asked around at my hagwon and everyone is stumped. apart from those artificial 'korean folk villages', nobody has any recommendations.

i was hoping to go this saturday? anyone have any good ideas?

Hwaseong Fortress is a convenient option. It's not far, and I guess it's not really out of the city but it is still nice enough.

Lots of small villages in Gangwon-do to the East but not necessarily the sort of old, traditional, nice-to-look-at type.

I've not really visited many villages but there are lots of options for nice areas out the city. Ganghwado or Muuido near Incheon are nice, especially when the weather is a bit warmer. I know there's a bus that goes straight to Muuido from Incheon Airport.

I'd say the type of village you're hoping for is pretty rare these days, what with so much of the country being rebuilt after the Korean War in the 1950s, and nothing after that will look so nice. I love looking around at old buildings and the like and I've never heard of a village like that, except the artifical "folk villages" and I'm sure they were built recently too. Maybe that's why they were built...

Namhansanseong is good for a walk around.
Icheon is a small place maybe one hour south. Tried pottery making and stuff and then relaxed at the miranda hotel hot springs resort for the afternoon. Good day out.
Why not make it a weekend and head to Kyungju. Great place for a two day trip I reckon, although def. best in late summer.
