So, I leave Korea in two weeks. My boss called me ino the office today and told me that the Government had been on the phone to him earlier about me not paying my pension. Apparently they told him I owe a lump sum in unpaid contributions. They said they would take it out of my bank account if necessary. My boss said the best thing to do would be to transfer all my money home, keeping expenses for the next two weeks, and just not pay them. Now, since this is the first I've heard about any pension scheme (it's not in my contract), I have no intention of paying them. I also believe that the boss should be paying half aswell. Looks like he has no intention of paying it either. I don't really care at this stage, I'm outta here. I also recently found out he hasn't been paying medical either. Again, I don't care. I drafted up pay slips for the last four months, and minus tax etc, but with no medical and pension, he hasn't been taking money off me. Anyway, forgive this big rant, but thought I'd put all the info in there. What I would really like to know, if anyone can help, is whether there is any way I can be fined, or forced to cough something up at the airport. Really don't need that now - up till now I've had a great experience here. If anyone knows anything about this, advice would be greatly appreciated, Bealna.

Well, you know that by taking your own money and running you're cheating yourself out of about 1.3 million or so, right? You should be putting in a certain amount each month and your boss should be matching it. I don't believe this is optional.

A lot depends on your nationality. Some countries have agreements with Korea, so their citizens are eligible for pension refunds, others arent. You owe it to yourself to find out, either way. I bought a car with my pension cheque, as it was a substantial sum after 4 years.

that's the thing. I am Irish, so I wouldn't get a refund if I had been paying the pension. But are the pension people really able to go into your bank account to get the money? I can't believe this and it is causing me to be suspicious, even though my boss has been fine up till now.

I'm 99.99% sure they can't go into your account with out permission, how would they even know which bank you deal with?

If you want to play it safe, take the bulk of your funds out now, in the form of travelers cheques or money orders so they can be deposited into your account back home without a fuss ( safer than traveling with a ton of cash too)
