I need help with two things related:

1st
My laptop has just died. I think it has a virus...I was working on the internet then the page would not close...it just froze. I turned the laptop off by pushing the stanby button.

It started up, but went to DOS and asked how I wanted to start computer...safe mode/ normal etc. I tried all of them but it kept going to a blue page saying windows was not opening to stop damage to my computer. Then it wouldn't do anything.

I tried going to system restore, but it won't let me use windows system restore, only packard bells, and that will only let me restore it to factory settings (loosing all data).

I have a copy of Windows XP professional and a Master DVD of Packard Bell (for factory settings)

Help urgently needed. The harddrive doesn't matter...I have bought a new one...I jsut need to get into windows and retrieve all my photos of Korea and burn to DVD.

Help urgently needed.

It is a Packard Bell Easynote
80GB harddrive, running Windows XP Professional.
It is only 1 1/2 years old.

2nd
I have a new Samsung 120 GB hard drive.
How do I set this up in the packard bell to work instead of the old one, once I have gotten the photo's of the old drive?

I am a complete novice, so really need help. I don't want to loose those pictures.

Cheers

Take your laptop and your new drive to a laptop repair shop in the Son-in plaza by Yongsan station.

Have them pull the drive out of your laptop, put it into an external case and move the data to your new/2nd drive.

THEN put the drive back into your laptop and do a factory restore.

the beaver...I am free in the morning, working in afternoon, evening.

I have just installed old drive into external case.
I have fitted new drive into laptop.

Turned on and it says, Hard disk boot sector invalid, press h to retry, but just repeats this over and over.

Do I need to format, install windows on new drive?

Thanks for the replies.

Hm.

That's odd. Make sure the drive is seated properly and if that doesn't fix it either there's a boot sector virus or your drive is screwed beyond anything I can do.

In any case, I can't meet tomorrow until after lunch so maybe the day after?

It is the new drive in laptop that says no boot sector...I literally just fitted it and turned on laptop.

Man this sounds like a big problem....I haven't tried the old drive (now in external case). I am using a friends laptop, but don't want to plug in external just in case there is a virus.

(external case) came with a small CD for drivers, what is that for?

I am terrible with computers!!!

You put in a new drive and it says no boot sector? That's because there's no OS installed (it's a blank disk).

What's the error message that's given when you get the message, "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"? It should look something like: 0X0000: SOME_MESSAGE.

I can meet you pretty well in any coffee shop along the green line but I think Shinch'on station on the green line would be the best place because there's a Caribou coffee shop nearby with wifi. It might take a while because in this case the easiest thing I can think of to do is to install windows onto the new HDD but that requires a few things.

Do you have a full version of XP on CD? (If it says "recovery CD-ROM on the CD then it's not the full version.)

In your original post you said it was running XP Professional, but that's not common on most machines. Check on the bottom of the computer -- there should be a sticker that tells you which edition of Windows it is -- does it say "Windows XP Home Edition?" by chance?

Which EasyNote model is it?

In any case, if everything goes smoothly it'll take an hour. But, things rarely go smoothly and installs usually take a lot longer. Maybe Saturday might be the best day.

The error message was that...windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

But now, that doesn't even come up, it just goes to system restore straight away.

I have taken the old corrupted drive out and placed it in an external case now.

The new blank drive is in the laptop.

The CD says Service Pack 2...I think it is Home edition.

I'm sure it is all easy stuff to sort out...all I realy want is the photographs off the drive, the rest doesn't matter.

cheers

just in case your data is lost (probably not, but who knows) don't write anything to your drive. Take it out of the computer and put into an external case then run Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS and you should be able to recover any file.

I've used this a number of times on drives and it recovers everything including stuff that was deleted. You wouldn't believe the stuff you find on drives in computers that people have thrown out. It even has a fair chance of recovering data from formatted drives.

I just had a very similar problem and thought my hard drive was dead due to the blue screen of death.

I recommend:

Launch windows setup from your cd. Press R to go into recover console.
Once in recovery console type chkdsk /p and it'll check for problems. If it is the boot sector then you can type fixboot to fix it. If that doesn't work then
go into recovery console again and this time use chkdsk /r

good luck.
