I'm gonna be buying a meal plan from the cafeteria when I come, so I am just wondering if the food is any good, or of good value. I eat a lot.

It all depends upon your own expectations. Our university just finished its contract with the second outside service since I've been here. The food was the number one complaint of students (followed by not enough hot water in the dorm rooms). Now, the university is running it themselves, and I heard that the food is much improved. Personally, I never found the food bad, but as mentioned above, it is cafeteria food; to me it is what my late brother called a "gut filler".

My school is making me... I think it's mandatory. Not sure if it is or not, but I can't cook in the dorms and I don't want restaurant food 100% of the time.

They cannot make it mandatory to buy a meal plan. Either you participate in the paid-meals or you don't. If they charge you for more meals than you actually consume, then they're withholding your salary. So, you'll end up paying a month in advance and then filing a report for "meals missed." Why get involved in that paperwork drill? Do like I do and get your own meals. As I follow a vegetarian diet, that's the only way to ensure I get edible meals while at school.

I don't think he's teaching. I think he's attended a Korean uni.

I may have my posters mixed up, though.

I ate lunch every day at a Korean uni for a year. It's very cheap, but it's worse than the worst restaurant food. Which is not to say it's horrible, it's really just what you would expect. There was always a choice of at least two main dishes.

As far as salads go, in Korea, a salad is some white lettuce with ketchup and mayo sprayed on it. Blech. I don't recall ever getting boiled eggs. Just my experience.

The other uni teachers and myself refer to our caf as the slop buffet.

They occasionally do a mean fish cutlet. Otherwise, I brown bag it every time.

Many universities make it mandatory to buy a meal plan if you live in residence. It all depends on which university.

They can say mandatory all they want, but if they charge you for even one meal more than you actually consume, it's an illegal withholding of your salary.

Perhaps it's a meal plan card which acts as a debit card (buy credits in cash, then pay each meal for the individual dishes at whatever cost). In university, in res., I had to purchase the mandatory meal-plan, so I bought one worth 200 dollars (the cheapest plan available). If the K university has this option, perhaps this is the best starter plan (more credit can always be purchased later). I don't know, I thought this was pretty much the norm nowadays (debit system).

Now, debit system is a different story. I think those are great. Buy the card (you pay more for the cutesy ones, such as the bears, rabbits, etc.) and then put whatever amount of money you want on it. Then, if you do go the cafeteria, you wave the card over the scanner. That's convenient and honest, to boot.
