This is a good thread for a minority of people I've seen in Hongdae on a Saturday night. Native teachers walking down the street drinking straight from the bottle with extra bottles protruding from each pocket. Each man for themselves I s'ppose, but to me disgusting behaviour Crying or Very sad

If I start on a Friday and drink until I collapse I can get through 10 bottles. And they don't do liver transplants for chronic stage 4 alkies btw.

I've so rarely got drunk just off soju when I was actually keeping track. If you're drinking with Koreans how could you possibly estimate even if you stuck just to soju? Do you western guys who hang out only with other westerners drink only soju all night and keep you're own bottle in hand all night, get up and say 'off to the fridge - time for number four'?

I know I can do three and probably four over the course of an evening with lots of food.

1 is a good primer at dinner before going out. 2 gets me a little too drunk at dinner. 3 and I'll probably go home immediately after dinner (yeah, soju is reserved as a dinner drink w/ Korean food only).

Zero. I hate soju. It's rougher than tequila and worse for hangovers than paint thinner.

Nothing is worse than tequila for a hangover; are you kidding me?

Anyway, when you're up to a few bottles of wine a night or a bottle of hard liquor, soju is a cheap alternative for the chronic alkie in Korea. It cuts costs big time. Or so people tell me. It's not so bad if you get a big plastic water bottle, cut the top off, pour in a bottle of soju, add some ice and a splash of oj and shake (not stir, lol). Who wants to be running for refills all the time if you're a fast drinker? Not me. When you're drinking to get drunk, soju is by far the cheapest thing in this country--unless you go for the heinous (the horror....the horror...) W5,000 vodka at certain department stores.

For all you heavy drinkers, heed my advice. Soju is a liver killer. Sure it is cheap, but it has a lot of crap in it. Two years ago I was told to stop drinking soju by my Doctor because of my liver function tests. I only drink quality booze now and my liver is in excellent shape. Soju is deceptive. The 20% is misleading. They intentionally sell it in small bottles to make you think you aren't drinking so much.

Seriously? Yet another reason to continue down the path to sobriety.

I had a tattoo artist in Thailand who had a scar from his neck down to below his belt. Liver transplant. Thai whiskey. Probably the same story.

Thing is, if you're a heavy drinker there's no way you can afford to buy the good stuff on a daily basis.

I don't mind some soju with barbecue, spicy food or raw fish, but too much makes me lose the plot.

I agree. With the questionable health standards of Korean restaurants, I think soju is probably a great killer of whatever health risks are involved to a certain extent. I could be wrong, but I tend to think soju kills off the bad stuff while you're dining at these places.
