My wife and I, both teachers in Hong Kong, are considering a move to S. Korea for a few years. We just had a baby, and while hiring domestic helpers is pretty much the norm here in Hong Kong and reasonably inexpensive, what is the situation in SK? I work at Korean International School here in HK and my Korean colleagues have told me it's quite expensive and most working couples rely on Grandma and Grandpa for help..what about foreign teachers with kids? Any thoughts?

You can hire a Pillipina do all your housework & take care of your baby no problem. Hannam Supermarket has bulletin board with many names & phone numbers on it. You have be careful about the person you hire - I think I read somewhere recently where a couple had their baby stolen. I don't remember any details though. good luck.

thanks superfly...anyone else confirm this? because my Korean colleagues here have never heard of such a possibility (not to say it doesn't exist) and that immigration laws are very specific about keeping foreign domestic helpers out of korea....

Yeah some of the signs on the Hannam supermarket say they are legal to work in the country etc

The only way you can hire a live in helper legally is if you have the type of visa's that diplomats and CEO's get (not sure which type that is) but you need to be able to sponsor them as well as pay for the annual airticket home ect. You can get full time help though no problem at all, there is no shortage of maids around the Itaewon/ Hanam-dong areas.

It'll be three times the price in Korea. Domestic helpers in HK are dirt cheap but a lot more in Korea.

roughly 1 million per month for a live-in Phillipina. Also common here is someone coming in one or two days per week. Good luck.

My buddy drops a million a month for him and his family to have a come in house maid. She works 6 days a week and does about 10 hour days.

She is Korean, not Phillipino by the way. There are agencies that can help you out with this instead of super market wall ads where your chancing it by having your child being put on the Manila market!

You can also hire Chinese who have a Korean heritage.

They are allowed to work in Korea.
