Have many people done a runner from their jobs in Korea and if so were they reported? Just curious to hear any stories people may want to share.

Some teachers did runners from the school I worked at a few years ago. Two came back, and found work (in the same area!)

You can come back and get a work visa on the 1 year anniversery of your original visa. There's NO immigration blacklist of runners.

Bad teachers don't do runners, teachers run from bad schools (the majority of the time IMHO)

Do you have to wait a year or is that only if you are reported by your school?

Often you will have to wait until your visa expires (1 year anniversary of the entry date when you validated your visa) or it is canceled by the employer because you can only have 1 visa at a time.

Never having done one myself, I can only speculate from what others have said,

Some say if you go to immigration at the airport and request they cancel your ARC card, you can come back again within days. Others say you have to wait until it has expired.

My friend did one and was asked at the airport to surrender his ARC and asked if he was coming back. He just said he wasn't sure and that was that. I never knew what happened after he went home though - hence my curiousity at anyone else's experience

about 5 years ago after the school tried to steal my passport.

I left with a re-entry permit though and kept my card.

How soon after did you come back and what was the school's reaction when their teacher didn't turn up for work the next day? My friend had been through hell with his school and I laugh every time I picture the look on their faces when they went around to his apartment to find it empty after he didn't turn up for work.

In August of 2006, I hired a teacher who had come to Korea having already signed a contract. Once he arrived, the school said that there was no position for him. So, he looked around the neighborhood, and came into my academy. I interviewed him and offered him the job. We went through the process of applying for his visa, and Immigration denied the visa because the recruiter that he had applied through wanted his head hunting fee. The original school wasn't going to pay it, and in the recruiters words "he owned the teacher" We ended up paying the recruiting fee, and as soon as we did, his visa was processed.

So, there is some sort of computer file, or list, or perhaps the recruiter greased some palms.
