A draft bill in [the Korean] Congress may contain bad news for university and college workers on E2 and F2 visas. It states very clearly that only those who have a Masters (or higher) can receive employment from mid 2009.

True, I just accepted a Uni job only to be told a few days later that they could not employ me as i have no Masters. Apparently they had just been told this by immigration. So it may already be in effect.

You're full of #*@% Julius. You're still wondering what criminal records checks you'll need to renew at your school:

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/search.php?search_id=1852936544&start=30

So you magically got your criminal records check, just happened to apply for, interview for, and accept a UNI job, were given the paperwork immediately, and were told by immigration that you couldn't take the job because you didn't have an MA?

Laughing Laughing

Dozens of renewals before March 1 start already, and not a peep about this. Wasn't any problem with mine, either, and I just renewed last week before Seolal.

If this had truly happened to you, you would have posted about it days ago when it happened. Earliest it could have happened to you was last Tuesday, as immigration has been closed since then.

Sounds like you're just upset that I've pee'd on your little CELTA parade in another thread.

After a few years study in the US, a bitter and maladjusted Mr lee returned to his native Korea with a mission to oust foreigners from Korea. Swiftly rising through the ranks of the party, Mr Lee, who was ignored by western women for 3 years and sidelined by trendy american college students, quickly secured a wife with his Korean DNA/ foreign university credentials and was appointed to fuhrer status.

I have my crim check already thanks Wink Although I am wondering if it will need apostillizing, yes. But as i'm enjoying free time on a tourist visa and have not yet begun the job search proper, nevermind certain that I'll continue in this benighted country, its not really an issue for me right now.

Why?? It happened to me before seollal. lets see..exactly...on about February 2nd or 3rd. I didn't post about it because a)I'm not a full-time reporter for daveslcafe.com and b) I wasn't that bothered, I had other things on my mind.

let me know go and see what is unfolding on the CELTA thread... Rolling Eyes

So, it looks like our bud, Lee Joo Ho, who was quoted in the OP has made good and been appointed the presidential secretary for education, science and cultural affairs.

Pictured above he is top row, far right. I wonder if his being far right means anything in particular. Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

Hiring Philippinoes/Indians probably start with public schools and once it starts, it's going to move fast....
The Philippinoes/Indians are going to fight to get teaching jobs in korea even if the pay goes down 1.5 mil, they are going to be hard workers and also appreciate their oppertunity to be teachers in korea.
Sometimes attitude is more important than ability ( accent ), especially concerning education for children.

I am very much suppot hiring Philippino/Indian teachers, especially since join this forum.

So native white teachers for Hakwons and Philippinoes/Indians for public schools, it's not bad idea.

Unfortunately for filipinos and Indians, Koreans are so dead-set against it that hagwons advertise based on it:

Judging from your grammar--or lack thereof--I doubt a person like you would recognize the difference. Laughing

Koreans even after learning English from native speakers are often hard to understand by Americans and Englishmen. You are learning English because it is a global language used by people from all over the world, and if they can't understand you, it is bad for business. I highly doubt they are doing this in Japan. The Japanese don't try to do things on the cheap as much. If Korea wants more native speakers, they should make conditions more acceptable. What you propose that Phillipinos go to public school is not good, because it has the rich kids with the best teachers and more of the Koreans with the teachers who don't speak English that well. It is very unequal and a bad idea. I think some teachers from the Phillipines might be okay to fill in the gaps if necessary, but relying on them would not be a good idea.

Teachers from the Phillipines or India will probably pick up Korean faster, and eventually become bilingual. They will speak two languages anyway, so it wont be hard for them to pick up a third language. That's a plus for them. Now they might perhaps fit in to the community better than someone from a western country for various cultural reasons, and might facilitate the learning of English better, because Koreans who don't want to speak might not feel so intimidated about speaking up with someone from a similar cultural background.

They also might feel used when they see what western native speakers were earning for doing the same amount of work. Can't see them settling for less knowing that they are being ripped off to work harder than former expat teachers.

At the university I was at in Kyungju, we taught a two week English refresher session with highschool and middle school teachers during the summer and winter breaks. We were paid extra for our efforts as well. Now there were about 75 teachers from the Kyungpoake province at each session, and three native speaker teachers. Point of fact is that all of them bar 2 spoke excellent English. Lot had been exchange teachers at schools in the U.S. There complaint about English was the fact that they just don't use it. The more they don't use it then the harder it is that they will be able to teach with it. They said they had to attend the two week sessions, and that it was the only time they really were able to converse in English. When they return to their schools they will be enthusiastic about speaking English for about a month because of the refresher program, but will eventually slip back into using only Korean.

The one thing people are forgetting about with hiring Indians and Phillipinos would the still need a University Degree (BA). I think people are thinking they will take any fillipino with a good accent can get a job. Plus include getting a criminal check that reduces the amount of Filipinos coming a taking jobs.

Anyways - Koreans are still racist. It would take years for a school to maybe accept a foreigner. Buy then a Hagwon with a Filipino has lost most of it students to a White Faced Foreigner at the one around the corner. Of Indians and Philipino the most likely to be accept in Fillipino. Indians and Pakistanis would be too brown for the Koreans.
