Your exestential mindset is all good in a political philosophy class and all. But the real world is a totaly different thing.

A subjective pronouncement for a subjective question?

OH MY *beep* GOD, Jinju! The concept is just SO MAD, isn't it?!

Give me some scientific, moral justification for your position, twg,

Nine out of ten scientists would probably tell you to shut up and stop being such an insufferable prat.

The point stands: those who find it creepy have profound self-esteem issues and cannot, to save their lives, provide a shred of reasoning in favor of the position.

Don't worry - my hopes of you finding a shred of evidence for your claims weren't high.

Laogaiguk wrote:
BTW, your arguments are crap, especially since I am a 27 year old guy with a 20 year old girlfriend (extremely mature though).

It might not apply to you; nevertheless the vast majority of creepy votes have come from profoundly insecure women in their 30s whose arbitrary ethics is simply a pseudo position for jealousy towards males for having a practically uncappy sexual capacity as opposed to one bound up with youth and fertility. Whilst some of the creepy votes will be male and some good-for-him votes female, essentially it's a straightforward gender poll.

Laogaiguk wrote:
You are seriously fooling yourself if you think that girl in the picture married that guy by choice. I think you are too caught up in your own argument to see that though

Well, if it's not a truly consensual relationship, I would agree that it's creepy; but since we haven't any evidence in favor of the position, it's faith-based belief and adherents are blindly following the cult of insecurity-based arbitrary ethics.

Dude, I know you're one of those people that loves the sound of their own voice, and I'm not totally hating on you cause you do have some interesting things to say.

But get the *beep* out of here about that photo not being creepy!

Evolutionary/natural justification: check
Moral justification (consent): check
Creepy: Nope

People who base their ethics on personal insecurity as opposed to nature and a conclusion followed by a premise are creepy for sure. Shocked

Faster wrote:
How about you practice what you preach? The question is a subjective one ("does this photo creep you out?"). Somehow you found a way to connect this with your personal hobbyhorse (evolutionary psych) and are now telling people that their reactions are wrong because they aren't logically supported.

For the 7 billionth time, this relationship has natural justification (old males can father perfectly healthy babies) and moral justification (my consent view of morality). Oh creepiness! Whence comest thou?

It's only a subjective question if, like twg and endo, one gives the matter 5 seconds consideration only. It's a question of ethics. Moral statements express propositions about the actual state of reality and moral judgements are are truth-evaluable mental states.

Faster wrote:
You've written a lot of words on here trying to convince others not to feel the way they do--hey, "[c]heck this wild stuff out: people can do what they want with their own lives and bodies [and feelings] and maybe we should all just deal with it?.[sic]"

The question remains...why do people have irrational and unethical feelings towards perfectly natural and consensual relationships?

Funny, you talk about me not offering statistics yet talk about in the exact same post how the vast majority of people voting creepy are insecure older women. Statistics? Proof, no... And you talk about my position of her not being in love a faith based assumption which then makes yours a faith based assumption too. At the very least, you are consistently hypocritical in your defense.

The guy could never handle kids either, which would make having them unfair to the children. While there is also a slight chance she doesn't want any, I would highly doubt it. And while I do actually have problems with a lot you said, "you" and your opinion of this are not worth my time nor of any consequence to me. The time you put in this is actually creepy.

Absolutely everything I've said directly affects the real world, since I have stressed the individual's unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his or her choices, not insecurity-based arbitrary ethics.

I'd appreciate it if you at least tried to discuss the matter calmly and rationally and avoided using vulgar language.

You said the relationship is statistically unlikely to be consensual, that she was acting essentially unfreely. It's a bold claim with no likelihood. Actually, the likelihood is that it's entirely consensual, since he's likely to be richer and probably doesn't beat her like the violent Muslim men that are Indonesians ("They also tend to love their husbands to death and to spoil them...Mine does!"). The poll question is essentially "are you a man or a woman?" so my suggestion has some likelihood based on basic common sense.

Laogaiguk wrote:

He might die fairly early in their lives. He's a Brit and the life expectancy of a Brit is 77.5 to 80. He looks pretty old and I wouldn't have kids personally if I was him for that reason, but if they choose to do so, so be it, since we cannot tell people what to do with their lives and bodies. Your supposition that "the guy could never handle kids" is utter rubbish, since in a more traditional society like Indonesia, the lion's share of the 'handling' will be done by the mother. Males don't have a massive investment in reproduction anyway, anywhere - no pregnancy, no breastfeeding - or hadn't you noticed? Rolling Eyes

Well, that's great. Kudos to you.

If you have problems with a lot of what I've said, as you put it, try to attack claims, otherwise, if you all you want to say is how you don't care and it's not worth your time, here's an idea.....go and do something else? Nutty stuff, I know.

Based on the title of this thread you can imagine my disappointment when I thought I was going to find a how-to-guide. Schucks.

Some people are attracted to sheep, trees, vases. Who knows. Maybe the girl was really attracted to that old guy.

My question is:

Why do alot of young women gravitate themselves toward "significantly" older "gentlemen"?

I have met a considerable number of girls, who were in their 20's, who either dated or married guys in their late-40's and early-50's (in one instance, the girl was 22 and the guy was 65... Confused )

Some of them said that it was the "fatherly" figure that made them feel safe to be around and that they have the time (and the money) to spend with them.....

IMHO~~ I would say "good for them both".....if they find some kind of compatability together, more power to them......

Actually, I find it inspirational for some who feel they are "too old" to find true love at an old age..........I guess it proves "anything is possible"..........

I'm a young guy, I voted creepy. I'm not one to judge but it's just my gut reaction. Maybe I don't like the idea of having old guys as competition, lol. Maybe there's always going to be a part of me that finds it hard to accept that the woman is in it for love when the age and financial disparity is so great. I watched that clip of cougar women and didn't find it at all creepy. I was wondering where I could sign up.

It's a good deal for both of them but is it freedom when he doesn't have an abundance of women and she doesn't have an abundance of money?

I still find it creepy however I am fully aware that if I live another 55 years, I'll be his age and if I am still single I doubt I'd find the idea very creepy then.

Creepy was Pattaya and the packs of obese, elderly German men with pre-pubescent looking Thai girls on their arms.
