Since when in duck meat RED???
Went out with the Korean teachers for dinner. I was told the meat was duck. But it sure didn't taste like any duck I've ever had. And it sure didn't luck like any duck meat I've ever seen.
This was a deep, bright red meat with the usual dense, moderately tough fat found on an animal, not the light, porous fat found on a duck. I know because, as usual, they brought the slices of meat out on a platter to be grilled at the table. (I'm really getting tired of looking at raw meat before eating. It's disgusting and highly unappetizing.)
All raw duck meat I've ever seen has been white, like chicken.
Does Korea have some sort of strange, red-blooded duck?
The meat didn't taste like beef or pork, but that's not much of a surprise because most of the meat here tastes about the same: tasteless. On this score, it tasted about like the stuff they claimed was goat meat, which also was tasteless - and it looked about the same.
When I get food in Korea that doesn't resemble the English word used to describe it, I assume there has been a mistake in translation. But the teachers insisted it was duck.
All I can say is if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it IS a duck. But I didn't see this one walk or talk.
Anyone ever see a real Korean duck that has red meat??? |

I was once told that Korea is known for their duck, not China like the western world has come to believe. |

Quit being a wuss and eat it. Yes, duck is red.
I'm assuming you've only had Peking duck? |

I'm a little confused?
Are you referring to Pekin duck or Peking duck? The later is cooked with a red coating sauce, but the meat is still white. Does the former have a red meat when raw?
I am talking about RAW red meat. Are you really telling me that there are ducks that have red meat? The only bird I know with red meat is the emu, and possibly the ostrich.
And, to reply to the original comment, I grew up on Long Island, so my point of reference is the Long Island duck, which is what I think of as the taste of duck meat, which is delicious. Perhaps there are other ducks that don't taste like Long Island ducks.
Whatever I ate did not taste like the duck I am familiar with. It did not taste delicious.

I had it for the first time in Korea. I was shocked that it was red, and tough, and tasteless. What a let down.
From the way people used to talk about duck being so good... I was really dissapointed. Until I realized that most of the other meat I've eaten here would pass for edible back home either.
Not *all* mind you. In Seoul I've found a couple of places that manage to grill meat without making leather. |

I've had it twice in Korea and both times it was amazing. Go to a pricier place and get the stuff that is first smoked (with high quality wood) and then you barbecue it galbi-style. Yum. It was better that way than either of the two times I had in the states, one of which was at a Ruth and Chris Steakhouse (pretty famous steakhouse in the states, maybe Canada, too?). |

That'd be Ruth's Chris Steakhouse; highly overpriced & overrated, not to mention the blindingly ill-advised and unfortunately ridiculous name. |

I've also had duck here, it's red and quite good. Much better than the regular pork stuff available. |

It looked like this http://blue_moon.typepad.com/blue_lotus/2007/02/duck_breasts_wi.html
and no they wouldn't show me the duck even though i demanded proof...
i think the confusion might lie (from what i can tell from pictures) in that the duck skin is white and underneath the skin the flesh is red. though different areas of the duck may be different colors also, but i'm not sure. |

The duck meat was red because it had been marinaded in something spicy. |

The first time I had duck was in Korea. Later I found out it was dog. A pronunciation error (duck - dog). But that was in a stew and not bar-b-qued. Since then, I've had duck, Korean style, in Canada. Yes, it is red.
Thought I'd share my story with you since you seem to love Korean food so much. |

I don't like korean style duck, ok its nice enough to eat but it is always a severe dissappointment compared to English style roast duck or Chinese. I have just baught an oven so soon enough I will be able to say if it is inferior meat or just the way its cooked - i fear a bit of both...had smoked duck at a chinese restaurant the other day and was again dissappointed with the flavour, but that wasn't peking style. |
