I'm a good employee and have bent over backwards to be accomodating, even as far as letting my boss choose when I can take my holidays! Laughing I know I'm a bit of a sucker for letting the boss do that.. I'll explain the situation.

We came into work on election day which as you all know is a national holiday on the promise that we could have the 31st of December off in lieu. A good idea as then we had 4 days off in a row.

Anyway, 10 days off are the standard according to my contract and I fancied having a long weekend on my birthday and wanted the Friday the 29th off and the 3rd of March off so I can celebrate my birthday with a bit of peace and quiet.

So I went to my boss and the first thing she said was 'no - whose going to cover your classes'

'I beg your pardon?'

'I will let you have Friday off... actually let me think about that! but you are not having Monday off'

After a bad start when I came here at first, we have been getting on swimmingly so I said fine and see what she was going to suggest, if she was going to turn down my days off I was going to ask her when was I going to be able to take my days off as she is always going to be 'short staffed' so at teachers meeting last Monday she said I had to test the students at the end of the month (my proposed day off)

'Have you thought about my day off?'

'Ahhh, yes... is it OK if you take it on March 28th?'

To keep the peace I said 'OK then, I'll take that day off then, its only my birthday going up the tubes after all'

But then she was trying to make out that this proposed day off was the second day off I have had, first of all she tried to say that the day off I had in lieu of the election day was one of my ten days, when I said we came in on a national holiday that day she then said that 'actually we had the 2nd of January off'

I was thinking 'Hmmm that doesn't sound right because the 2nd was a Monday' so after looking through the register and finding out that we were in on the 2nd I went to put her straight and she hmmed and hawwed but had to concede that I was right and I have yet to take a holiday.

Anyway, Tuesday, Wedenesday and yesterday she was standoffish, today she was quite hostile. I'm getting a bit annoyed about her attitude because I have done everything to be a good employee and she is so petty as to be angry because I found her out in trying to rob one of my 10 days off!

Anyway, how will this go down do you think? I'm not one for taking crap and will be taking the 100 meters at midnight if she doesn't buck her ideas up. I have an idea she hasn't been paying me pension or medical either. How can I get information about my contributions to the system. (I don't want to accuse her without proof)

You give an inch..........they will take a foot.

If you allow yourself to be walked on, then they will walk on you.

Couldn't agree more. She sounds like the dragon lady I had at my former hagwon.

You know what mate, if I left this hagwon it would cause chaos and would probably shut it down.

I don't want to do that but I know if I had to go to heaven based on how I have behaved working there I would get a free pass off St Peter.

I'm very annoyed that despite the fact I have acted to the best of my abilities while I have been here, she is annoyed because I found her out trying to take one of my few days off me.

If I do end up walking, I know I can hold my head up high, I just wish she would try and make it easier for us all to make her business work!

If your boss finds out just say your home countries government is demanding this information and you didn't want to bother her.

Being a good employer doesn't get you anything except making you look like a walk over. Just give her a sob story or two and whine as much as possible. In your contract you really need something like 'Five consecutive days' or have weeks instead of days.

Oh right, I thought it was a national holiday so that all Koreans could participate in the election if they so wished.

My gym was shut on the day and the reason was 'it was a national holiday'
I'm not arguing with you Atavistic, it might not have been but thats what I have been led to believe.

Besides, the boss shut the hagwon on the 31st and shouldn't be counted as one of my 10 days as none of us were working that day. Cool

This is correct. Election was NOT an official national holiday. It was a holiday for government, some public schools and those businesses that wanted to close. Others stayed open. It does not count as a National Holiday in the standard teacher contract.

My school was shut down, too, but it's wasn't a national holiday. If the day on the calendar is red, it's a national holiday. If not, it's not.

As for shutting the place down, at my first hogwon, we were closed for one week in the summer and nobody worked. That WAS five of our ten vacation days. It depends on the size of your hogwon.

Don't get me wrong, your boss is a bitch. But now she's finding it easy to backpedal and play vacation games because it wasn't a national holiday, no matter what she may have said at the time, no matter what excuse your gym used.

Korea, sparkling!

There you go, I stand corrected! Very Happy

I think I should have the right when to take my 10 paltry days (and even then she is fighting it) and if she decides to close the hagwon then thats her business.

Anyway, it looks like she has decided to go down the 'evil looks and stern voice' route while I wish her luck in finding someone new on very short notice if her attitude doesn't improve soon. Cool

Excellent advice. By the sounds of it she's being an a$s.

Hogwan bosses and the truth=El da del arquero

If you get hold of the copies of payslips with pension etc being paid then that's going to serve you well, and be evidence, if anything else crops up. More than likely you won't get them. Scrimping and saving is what she's doing. You're aware of that, which is good. After this year get into PS you'd be much better suited for that.

A little honesty, an open mind and character (of knowing what's what) goes a long way with PS. No problem, you'd enjoy it!

No organization depends on one employee, no matter how important that one employee thinks they are. Not meaning to be rude, but it's true.

Walk right into your local Pension office. Show them your ARC# Ask them to show you how much you have accrued so far, and then ask them to show you how much you will have accrued by the end of your contract.
