I would not be surprised if the talking heads on the right got together at their monthly circle jerk and tea party and decided to blast McCain for the GOOD of the Reps.
For McCain to win the general he'll need the independents and possibly some Dems. The rightheads know that the Reps, no matter how conservative, will come out to vote against a black man or a Clinton. They also know that in order to get the votes for the nomination McCain is being forced to tack right, possibly too far right for some indys. By attacking McCain they endear him to the indys. Rush even said this, which might deflate the effect.
I expect all manner of dirty dealings from the party of Rove this time around. Reps know it's a long shot this time around, but the powerful don't give up that power freely. |

Though I have no idea either what Limbaugh and Coulter are getting at in their attacks on McCain, it's elementary logic that somebody that the person you don't like doesn't like isn't necessarily a person worth supporting. McCain doesn't like Edwards. Edwards doesn't like McCain. And yet, I don't like Edwards. I don't like McCain. I don't like Limbaugh. Limbaugh doesn't like McCain. And so on. I'm very glad that logic doesn't dictate that I have to like Edwards simply because he doesn't agree with McCain.
Best to stick to the topic at hand and stop pretending McCain is any more or less worthy of support because of what two loons think. |

No, the thread's turned into a weird sort of game where you try to find out if your political choices are correct by comparing them with the person you don't like. "Person x doesn't like my candidate and I don't like him, yay!" "Oh my God, I don't like person x, I hope he doesn't say my candidate's cool because that's just EWW!" "Buchanan likes y and I don't like Buchanan so that's great that I also don't like y, that means I'm right" and so on.
The thread is about loons attacking McCain, and even trying to ascertain the worth of a candidate based on the opposite of what they think gives them a certain validity, when the reality is that they're just loons, and don't act as any sort of political barometer. Ever been the only guy in a group that a crazy guy on the street likes? It isn't because your personality is any closer to the crazy guy, it's because he's a loon. And the guy he doesn't like - he's not any farther away from the crazy guy in personality, the crazy guy's just a loon. That's why you ignore him. Same with these people. You don't spend the rest of the day talking about who's the least crazy by virtue of being least liked by the crazy guy. |

I don't remember ever having a debate wound. I discuss with people I respect, give others I don't know that well the benefit of the doubt, and skim past those that I don't learn anything from or are prone to long flame wars. It's all good here. |

Oh, jeez.
All I'm saying is, there sure were lots of loons here supporting RP. And you supported RP. And look at what you've typed. It's only half-serious. |

No, the thread is about one loon attacking McCain in the context of the other who attacked him earlier (thus the "far right" pattern I ref in my title). No more no less. |

| And if we want to take it further, I think it suggests Republican dissent, factionalism, and disunity in 2008. Ya-ta Boy mentions, above, cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. I think this is on the right track... |

Looks like disarray to me. But I'm not Karl Rove, so I could easily be duped by his master plan (he must be still pulling the strings behind the scenes - he's like the Obi Wan Kenobi (sp?) of the Repubs at this point).
That's my conspiracy theory. Speaking of which, what happened to IGtG? |

| Maybe not a master plan inasmuch as an attempt to threaten and coerce McCain into the far right. |

Karl Rove is a footnote to history these days; he's not even influential in the Bush White House any more, and McCain hates his guts (over the illegitimate-black-baby push polling in the 2000 SC primary).
My prediction is that the 2008 elections won't look anything like 2004. With no Darth Rove, and no Kerry to run against, the vaunted Republican slime machine will spend most of its time idle. There will be attacks, to be sure, but not the vicious politics of personal destruction we saw four years ago. The Democrats may get some mileage out of calling McCain an adulterer.
The Republicans may not be in disarray, exactly, but they're a lot less than enthusiastic about their candidate. They'll pull together in the general -- in these days of hyperpartisanship, it's hard to imagine any candidate getting less than 45% of the popular vote. Which is probably about what McCain will get. (Not that I'm an oracle, that's just a WAG.) |
