I just received my visa approval number today. The consulate I need to visit is in Chicago for the interview.

I called them up and they have no availability for interviews until Wednesday the 27th. No problem, except my flight leaves on the 23rd.

I tried arguing with the lady, asking if there was any way they could fit me in on Tuesday (Monday is President's Day, they are closed) and she refused, saying I should get a new flight. Well, that's not going to happen.

I'm sure I am to blame for not scheduling an interview in advance, but I was told to wait until I had the visa approval number.

I was thinking of just going there on Tuesday (it's a 3 hour drive for me, I'd go today but I have to work) and hoping they fit me in.

Any suggestions? I can't get another flight, my flight is non-refundable, and I paid for it. (Getting reimbursed on arrival.)

I'm sure I'll get blamed for delaying or something, which is fine, but I will ignore your posts, and await the helpful suggestions with grateful, open arms.

Edit: I suppose the flight can be changed, looking online again. So that's an option I had overlooked, which relieves me somewhat. However, I'd still prefer to arrive a week before I am scheduled to start teaching instead of the day before.

I am sure that you can change your flight date for a $100 or so. That is better than losing the flight completely. Did your school tell you to book the flight that day, if so, get them to cover the cost of changing the date.

Yeah, it looks like that's what I'll end up having to do. No big deal, better than losing the whole cost of the ticket. I'll wait until the director of my school emails me back to see what he thinks, but I'll probably end up delaying my arrival a week.

Although maybe I'll call Wednesday next week and see if they can fit me in, since they apparently only do interviews on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Thanks.

you have to go there anyway to drop off your passport - just make sure you bring a copy of your passport (front page) and photos, etc. (they have a requirement list there, ask about it)

when you go if they ask about the interview, just SMILE NICELY say you're there now can they do it PLEASE - if you have the visa issuance number maybe they'll just process you anyway - that's the most important.

good luck let us know what happens.
