I don't know how Koreans catch and kill dolphins, but in Japan, they do it almost same way Koreans traditionally kill dogs for eating: round them up, seaparate mothers from calves and beat the ever-lovin scheisse out of them until they drown or die of injury.

I don't think this is true...

Keywords: Taiji, dolphin

I know they kill dolphins (not talking about the fish this time, and I think it's terrible that they do it), but I've never heard of them "beating them to death"... I checked a few pages on google but couldn't find anything that said that (if you have a link please post it). As far as I know they kill them by cutting them open with a knife (which is still gruesome, but not as bad imo as hanging them up and beating them to death with a stick and finishing them off with a blowtorch, which is what happens to some dogs in Korea apparently)...

They don't hang them up. Just beat and stab them in the water.

Don't feel like looking it up now, but what does it matter?

Dunno, was just wondering why you'd make the claim (that they beat them to death - you compared it to dog torturing) if it's not true... that's all (not trying to justify the actual killing).

-I have to agree. It's not worse to eat a dolphin than a horse or a dog. However I know you can get some in Donghae.

Wow, you're pretty smart. It's simply called "dolphin" in most places it's eaten, hence the quotes I put around the word, and the link I gave to clarify. Didn't think it would be so hard for some people...

Many biologist believe that dolphins have are the second highest intelligent species on Earth. They feel that given enough time, dolphins could achieve a much greater intelligence than they have at this point in time, even if it takes 1000's of years. Obviously they would never achieve the level of intelligence found in humans, but given their existing level of intelligence, they could achieve far more than any other animal given enough time.

The problem with thinning out the dolphin population, is that it will substantially reduce the probability that dolphins will develop increased intelligence; effectively creating a plateau at their current level. Although they face population reducing obstacles such as increased pollution, human development in breeding and migrating areas, and destructive technology such as sonar, they are the one animal that still has a good chance at developing further.

Here's a link to some of the things dolphins can do, its pretty remarkable considering how few life-forms on Earth have developed those skills. Since we already have plenty of food in first world countries like Japan; the destruction of the dolphin population is pretty much a complete and utter waste.

Quote:
On a beautiful day in 1997, researchers working at Pereirinha beach, off the southern coast of Brazil, observed a little dog going into the sea and swimming towards the dolphins. To their surprise, the dolphins approached the dog and then started throwing it into the air. The dog seemed to enjoy the 'game' and continued playing with the dolphins for more than an hour. From then on, different dogs were seen trying to interact with the dolphins.

Coming from a farm boy, hardly red-neck I might add, basically any animal out there on this Earth is susceptable to human consumption.

You take this argument as far back as Genesis in the Holy Bible.

If the Japanese want to eat their shark fin and dolphin, certainly it should be done with restrictions involved.

Leave it to the nature-loving Green-type proponents to publicly admonish these actions.

If people want to eat 'taboo' animals, who's to say what's taboo or not?

Rolling Eyes Then back up your claim with a citation. I don't yet believe what you say is true (as I said) because you've given zero evidence. I've never heard of dolphins getting beaten to death in any way similar to how Korean dogs are sometimes tortured, or at all for that matter; every article I read stated that they are killed by being sliced open.

Can't be bothered. Was a long time ago and you know the 'net. If you must chew on something, I think it started with a Japan Times article which cited another article by this dude who's all over the Taiji dolphin hunting thing... yada yada...

But dolphins are likes cats: there's more than one way to skin 'em. Don't worry about it, babe. I was actually thinking of taking a trip up there myself to witness the horror (because, indeed, seems kinda extreme, don't it?), but as I recall (from the same article), it's quite hush-hush and they're likely to get the local popo involved, particularly if a foreigner is snooping around.

Okay, fine. I tried and got:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=he9w3aGvfjw (Obviously, someone's getting cut in the water for it to be that red, and obviously, the dolphin is alive and speared)

Guess "Taiji" and "dolphin" were too vague to google...
