Is there any place in all of Korea that has a good selection of LPs and CDs by obscure/underground artists? I have walked into records shops in Korea and the selection is appalling. I know I can buy it through the internet but nothing beats actually browsing in a store. |

I guess the question would be how obscure/underground you're talking.
I knew of a really good record shop in Sinchon, but I don't know if it's still there. |

Pavement/Guided by Voices obscure..not Gong/Faust obscure. Just outside of the mainstream. |

In Hongdae. Right near the university. Purple Records. Pretty good Selection of Western music, as well as Korean music and Japanese imports. Be prepared, it's expensive. |

Two great choices there.
There used to be a place that had that sort of thing, mostly Japanese import, in Sinchon, right at the end of the road that had Bennigans/Ruby Tuesday on it, just before you turned up to head toward Ewha. Just down from the Dunkin Donuts. Last time I was there was about a year ago. |

Purple Records is pretty much THE shop in Seoul since Tower Records in Gangnam went out of business.
Korea is a land where the mp3 rules supreme. |

Purple Records is nothing compared to Hyang Music over in Sinchon. Which is nothing compared to Rudeness in Harajuku in Japan. Of course they only deal with CDs.
The only record stores I've found are disorganised, and filled mostly with crap. There are a few in Dongdaemoon that have great Korean music from before the government cracked down on creativity, but go soon because the market is already being demolished. |

There's a place in Hongdae called Beyond the Moon or Over the Moon or something. It specializes in obscure psychedlic stuff, mostly late 60s folky stuff. Really great place to browse. Really expensive though. |

If you want LPs, try hitting underground shopping arcades around Namdaemun Market. I also know of a record store near Ahyeon subway station. |

Get off at Hongdae station and go out the University exit. Walk up past the Paris Baguette, etc like you're heading up towards all the bars. There's the pedestrian walk area right at the corner. It's right on the walk, to the left on the third floor. There's a big sign outside. At the corner just look left and up. |
